For those of us who still have the solid rear windows, could that glass be reused at all? I would imagine there's a way for them to be drilled by a shop that has the right equipment, without damaging them.

Once a piece of glass is tempered there is absolutely nothing that can be done to it, not lasers or even water jets. Anything that disturbs the structure of the tensioned molecules will result in the entire thing disintegrating.
In some rare cases the glass can actually be un-tempered, re-worked and re-tempered, but that takes a pretty specialized kind of process, as in expensive.
I'm trying to figure out how to use the original glass and glue the hardware needed to it, there are problems with that as well though, and it would require an electronic latch.

You missed the point slightly.
As long as the steel opened the same way I would still be interested. Even steel has some issues, the glass is more rigid than a comparable thickness sheet of steel so the construction is lighter and simpler. Then coating the steel to stay clean and rust free become an issue.
I'm going to play with this and keep looking for other alternatives as well.
Cheers Kevin, I was thinking in terms of increased security from prying eyes, less weight, easier working and better thermal behaviour for a truck that's being slept in and driven around hot places.
If there are rubber gaskets preventing any galvanic corrosion between bodywork and the insert then aluminium could be used. Use of a slightly thicker sheet would make it stiffer and there are few materials easier to work with.

Aluminum is actually a better choice than steel in some ways since there are a couple sheet alloys that have more lateral stability that a comparable piece of steel sheet.
Of course the parts then have to be water jet cut rather than laser cut so that doubles the price of the parts, and the material gets expensive, and I have to be more careful with the welding.....
It never ends.
But it sure is a fun project.
And you have to admit that the glass is just plain cool.

Aluminum is actually a better choice than steel in some ways since there are a couple sheet alloys that have more lateral stability that a comparable piece of steel sheet.

Hell I'd pay the money for the glass.
I would imagine that a big enough production run would reduce the per unit price of the glass, wouldn't it?

On the glass, unless the parts over over 100ct there is not much of a discount, the only change is that I would have to pay a $75 set up charge for any run size, but I seriously doubt that I will be fronting the 25k for window glass anytime soon, especially when I have to plan carefully just to bring in a roll of door seals.
The search just for a place to make that glass was a difficult one, and the guys I ended up working with did a great job, not to mention being a few hundred dollars less than any other quote I got.
I'm trying hard to figure out a way to use the factory glass, that seems to be the most advantageous possibility.

It'd be great if the factory glass could be used. I had forgotten that it's tempered and can't be cut or modified in any way.
Speaking of weatherstripping I need to order a set of rear hatch stuff from you when I get some extr5a cash...

It wasn't as big of a priority for me since they already have windows that kind of open, but if I work out a system that works for the 60s I might be able to adapt it to the 80s as well.
You are getting pretty close to the top of the 80 tailgate list as well, keep it in mind if you are planning a trip out this way in the next couple months.

Also, those windows have screens? I have slept few times in my car going to motorcycles track days and on off-roading and opening the windows on the 80 is great. But I have to improvise putting on screens. Once you built the fancy windows, it will be nice to figure out the screen arrangement. So the screens need to be be design such easy access to the back of the car is possible, but also to be able to sleep at night with Windows open.

I honestly don't think I've seen anything quite this cool since I first saw your tailgate lids!
I would definitely prefer glass if you take these production. Honestly wouldn't mind spending the kind of money you're talking about on the glass.
If you take these production, I would want on that list in a heartbeat.
BTW, how's the backorder on those stainless latches for the lids looking? Not to sidetrack this thread...
