sadly yes it was shut down only weeks after we took that trip

Yeah I think we may have been the last people to drive up some of those trails and to the upper bald.
Damn I loved that trip....I just laughed my ass off again reading the thread.....so true and a great time.....gets me motivated to change a few things so that we can do things like this again as a club...funny thing is that 40 is the one that JP is currently thinking about selling.
My first UC trip was the collowhee right after I got home from Iraq. That was an awesome trip. Too bad you cant camp on the "balds" anymore.
By the way that was Feb or March of 08 and it was friggin cold. I guess I fit right in running with no top on the 40.

Yeah I got the flu and pneumonia that weekend.

yes the lower bald is open via a graveled Mose's Creek..... I'll be honest though no one has really been up there and explored in a while and I would be surprised if the "locals" haven't found a path around most of those tank traps
It is one thing for the Forest Service to dig a tank trap but another to maintain it..... just saying
We were up there last Nov. and everything was either gated or tank-trapped. We found some dead end trails closer to town which were fun, but not very long. I'm sure if you talked to some locals, there are more trails out there.
I came through there on Monday but hd the fam in the 80 and no time to go explore.
