Snorkels!

I would never buy a Chinese snorkel. Not a smart move at all.
1.Chinese product for the most part has crap customer care.
2.Chinese product has a tendency to switch up or disappear all together.
3.I've personally seen Chinese plastic product change color due to UV light.
4.Your going to be drilling holes in your fender. Why would you risk needing to replace a fender cause some Chinese snorkel has a terrible stencil?
5.The ARB snorkel cost a bit more only due to quality care, customer care and a high quality product.

My 2 cents.

1) Who cares; what support do you need for a dorkle?
2) Who cares; I can replace with an alternative or whatever.
3) Who cares; it's cheap to replace and see #2
4) They all require you to cut a hole in the fender..... wait for it, even the spendy ones.
5) Really don't care on a personal level about dorkle.

If you are going to pay $300+ for a snorkel, makes sense to just go OEM at that point. At least it looks different and you can justify spending more money? I don't know.

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered one. Don't know if I'll ever get around to installing it though. Serious snorkel question. I know I'll probably never use it for a water crossing. I do however live in a place that's really dusty and hot. Think I'll notice a difference in intake air temps with it?

If I recall correctly, Andrew St. Pierre White (who's fond of measuring such things) claims a 15-degree temperature reduction on incoming air. And of course there's generally less dust up there.

If anyone doubts or doesn't believe the functionality of a snorkel/hood vents, go back to high school and take physics...

Will it make a noticeable difference in performance? Maybe not. But does it work? Of course, it's the simplest concept in the world.

That's your opinion man, there's been plenty of people here and elsewhere that've gotten the Chinese version no issues. Yes the template is a bit askew but anyone with half a lick of sense can work around that.

I think some folks are just upset they paid $300+ for something that shouldn't be more than $100.

I've shown a near 70deg reduction in air intake temps post snorkel. All part of my overheating novel. The hood vents gave a marginal reduction in underhood temps. I've measured with the vents open and covered and it's not a huge difference but it's there. I'm in SoCal so no worries about actually using it for water...although El Niño

I just bought and installed my snorkel. I saw these endless posts on Chinese snorkels vs the real deal and chose to pay more. Why? Well because the ARB is a better product. Three hundred bucks doesn't prevent me from eating so being upset about anything isn't really a thing at all, I just want who ever comes across this tread to think twice before going Chinese.

Will the Chinese snorkel work? Yes it should, but that doesn't mean I go buy a Walmart tent and expect it to hold up in extreme weather compared to the real deal.

I love these snorkel debates. "Chinese sucks! Buy ARB/OEM/Safari! If you buy a Chinese snorkel your 80 will blow up and you are supporting child labor and Big Red!" I find them funny. I don't give two s***s what someone buys for their 80. To each their own. If you want to spend $70 on a Chinese snorkel, go ahead. If you want to spend $400 on an Australian snorkel, go ahead. Who cares?!?! I've seen plenty of crap on people's 80s that I would never do to my 80 (powdercoating wheels, cupholders, aftermarket wheels, leather). Whatever floats your boat. It's your 80.

Oh, I'm getting a snorkel but it's purely for the "chicks dig it" factor! I live in Iowa, we've had 5 days over 90 degrees this year, I'm not worried about intake air temps. Plus we get plenty of rain so I'm not worried about dust.

well, no way I'm reading 8 pages of chinese vs ARB snorkels. But one thing I know: I ain't about to drill a big hole in my fender unless I'm 200% sure I can get the same exact snorkel parts as needed for the next 20 years....

Then don't add a snorkel. You can't be 100% certain (let alone 200%) that any of the snorkels will be available in 20 years. If anything I'd bet on the clones, because they sell more. If it's even close to the same shape, the snorkel covers the holes so adding new holes in a new spot (still behind the snorkel) won't show. NLXTACY's reasons to buy ARB or OEM (that I haven't noticed recently rehashed in this thread) make sense.

Not enough sense that I decided to pony up the extra cash, but sense.

Just put my chinese snorkel in my 60 and well... The stencil was 4 inches out and l had to reform the pillar support for it to work. Would do it again...yup. Would I buy from the exact same vendor...nope. Would I buy a fender if I botched it...yup. Is this topic worth 8 pages of bickering... Nope. Did I add to the bickering...yup. Do I care...nope...
