Well, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Mark, and I live in So Cal, about half way between LA and Palm Springs, in the awkward sounding city of Rancho Cucamonga. I bought my 1994 80 about two years ago, but only found Mud a year ago. Just lurked. Now I'm asking questions, so I might as well tell you who I am, and show you my rig. I was in a horrible car accident, so the build has been slow, and mostly easy things to work on. Backstory:
My last rig was a 1984 Scrambler. Fun, but time for more creature comforts with my 80
Actually always loved old Rovers. Spent a lot of time bouncing around with springs in my butt and the smell of insulation burning
When I starting having more female company, we had to upgrade to nicer rides (Cruisers!)
Elephant tried to kill this one
Learned to appreciate the load hauling capabilities
Also, they are so adaptable. It was a 4 day wait to get a brake pad flown in, so we found an old pad in the shed (of unknown make, age, etc) but it was big, and had pad left, so we traced the worn pad, and ground the other pad until it fit in there and ran it until the new parts arrived
Bought this with I think 155k on the clock. Extremely clean, not a drop leaking or anything. I threw on a rook rack, and then went about the business of thrashing it. Replaced belts and put in a new radiator. Flares torn by trees, Goodyear sidewalls all torn up in sharp rocks etc. Replaced with 35" Geolanders. Added a lot of "Desert Pin Striping"
Has been a great camping rig. you can see the changes starting to take place
Okay, a feeble attempt at tech for the moment, until I tackle the bigger plans. I taped off the areas I wanted to bed line, and hit them with the sanding sponge. It scuffs the paint just enough, and also burnishes the edges of the tape down at the same time. I sealed the edges of the tape with Duplicolor clear coat, then hit it with Diplicolor Bedliner.
Kind of like using green coolant, I know the Duplicolor product is readily available at any autoparts, so matching, repairing, touch up etc, will always be easy to do. If I can pass on a tip with this stuff, it's let it warm in the sun, shake it for 1 full minute, and clean the nozzle often. Clean it right away with denatured alcohol, and dab any blobs that spray out with a rag, and they blend right in. Oh, and apply with a circular motion!
So this is how she sits today. I didn't want a black truck with gold accents, so I tried to keep the horizontal line BELOW the indent, and follow the crease, but I don't think I like it, so I'm going to grab another can, tape it off and correct it, and raise it to the top. I smashed the tailgate in, so thankfully I got a good deal from @Deathvalleypaul , and threw the new red one on, after painting it with bedliner too. I'm going to carry the black around back when I fix the other lines, to tie it all in.
Future Plans:
Sliders (know anybody who wants to sell a set?)
Awning
Make attic rack permanent
Seat covers
Rear locker
Bumpers (I'll probably just keep hacking off the bent up parts, as you can see, until I HAVE to get them)
Address some of the remaining PM and performance questions I asked last night.
Maybe regear
Thanks for the help and entertainment thus far
