All year LX470's and 03-07 LC's came with smoke/smog sensor that monitors ambient air quality. Should it detect low air quality, it switches the HVAC system to recirculate.

The sensor is located almost directly below the hood latch. There are (2) versions. Pictured is the 98-02 LX version and now in it's correct orientation (air inlets on the backside).

I blew out the filter with compressed air and wiped the insides with a damp cloth. Don't break it, replacement sensor is $400.

Very cool. Thank you @hoser

Looks like that filter media may be able to be replaced? Not OEM but perhaps some other source?

On my 07 the sensor is flipped around 180 degrees so that the holes face back towards the radiator. I cleaned it and flipped it around and hopefully that helps it work better.
I dont imagine I want to turn this thing around do I?
I'm thinking mine is/was actually backwards. I'm going to edit the 1st post to correct the orientation as to not confuse others.

This is so cool, thanks for the research!

I made this demo video a few years ago that shows how to access the smog sensitivity screen. Quick answer is you press the recirculating button and hold it for a few seconds.
