Whats the back side look like? It looks to me like theres some way to retain the shaft/hub in the bearing from the backside, press the shaft/hub out of the bearing, then remove c-clip and remove bearing.

How Toyota put this thing together is still a mystery to me. Here are a couple pics of the back side of the pump for reference.

A small steering wheel puller that has bolts to thread into the hub would be my first thought.

Or you may need to press the center shaft out of the housing/bearing which will simutaneously press the hub off the shaft.

Be careful with the second option, as the housing may not have enough lip retaining the bearing on the backside to accomdate the pressure to do both at the same time.

Man, I sure coulda used this great thread when I tried to disassemble my pump! Perhaps I wouldn'ta stripped the main shaft like I did if I'da known it was left hand thread! D'oh! It's what pushed me into desmogging the 2F.

Thought I'd better circle back and post up the final outcome on the '80 40 smog pump rebuild. Ended up taking it to NAPA and they were able to use a puller to remove the pulley retainer which allowed access to the bearing. Replaced bearing and reassembled pump.

Has anyone found a supplier for the vane seals used in the smog pumps? I have a 76 FJ40 that I thought had a bad bearing on the pump, but it turns out that one of the vane seals was broken in two and creating havoc in the pump.

Once I clean the pump thoroughly and give some attention to the bearings everything will be good except the seals.

Any ideas?

Fast Eddy is correct. The carbon shoes are unobtainium. If your cracked, worn shoes are not replaced, the pump will not put out much volume.

I think this may be your biggest challenge to rebuilding your pump.

I rebuilt mine about ten years ago and ran into the same problem. I searched and searched for a source of new carbon shoes without success.
I eventually pieced together enough intact shoes from other cruiserheads who were replacing or scraping their pumps to repair my original pump.

I found this place. Looks like they might have just what we are looking for. Will contact them monday once I have specs.

Still only used pumps, AFAIK.

Does anyone know what material the seals are made of? I'm not the best at metalurgy but could probably machine them down if I new the proper material.

I'm not in too good of an area to find used pumps.

Thanks

They're graphite. If you've got internet and access to this site, you could post up on the wanted board and get a non-working pump to take apart.
