Sorry Steve - my Techs Manual only goes back as far as 1974 for Chevy/GMC trucks. The SM465 takes 8.0 pints of gear oil!

I put 3 quarts in it, and it was not to the fill plug...so I had another half sitting there and dumped that in, and it still was not there...
I bought into that anti-GL5 stuff and I am putting Redline 75-90 Synthetic in this gearbox....seems to work well so far....
Will be putting some real road time on it this Friday/Saturday/Sunday....

When I put the truck tires up a month back, gear oil leaked out my early ('47-'53) SM420 input shaft as you know, there is not a seal on the early ones, and the gear oil soaked my clutch disc....
So, I installed a NOS 420, the latter ribbed case style, that I picked up in '95 from a Millitary surplus dealer in Salt Lake, along with changing the clutch over from the three speed set up to the four speed.....also installed one of Advance Adapters transmission nose cone/front bearing retainer conversion pieces that replaces the ring and sleeve to make the 420 work with the Land Cruiser three speed flywheel housing....and after a lot of machining(holes were not in the correct location to bolt to the trans(which shares the same bolt pattern as any 420) and clearancing the inside part of the retainer so that it would not bind on the input shaft, things went together just fine.
Truck moves again.
The whole idea with this was to prevent the clutch from getting another gear oil bath when I dump the truck next time....
Cool, I had issues with the clutch soak too. But mine was due to mixed parts from early and later sm420s junkyard special. I wasn't smart enough to notice the lack of input seal the first go around.
no, the input shaft has to be replaced as well. The older style had grooves in it to fling oil back in to the tranny. The newer style has a seal surface.
Mine leaked when going to down steep grades, otherwise it was fine. Make sure the oil return on the nose cone isn't blocked

So did you get a good number for a fill of gear oil, Steve?
Need drain and refill my tranny due to a transfer that likes to fill it up for me
That factory fill plug is in a pretty inconvenient spot...

Pretty easy fix bud….
I welded a –8 O-ring boss adapter into the PTO cover at the full level and used it for a return hose back to the fill plug on the Land Cruiser transfer case. Would work fine to fill the transmission from that spot also. Pretty sure I still have this stuff someplace...not using it since the Atlas install.
A five-gallon gear oil pump makes putting gear oil into the standard fill hole far easier. I have not ever had a issue using an eight-inch adjustable wrench to remove and install the fill plug on the side of the trans.
Harbor freight occasionally has them on sale for about 20 bucks. Pretty nice tool for the cash. Typically, gear oil in a five-gallon bucket is a bit less monies also.
I know you know that the NOS SM420's don't have a PTO cover...
I've had one of the 5 gallon pumps for years, but it would still be easier to just know how much to fill and do so through the shifter cane. Just reduces the margin for a mess.
I could tap my transmission case where the PTO cover is supposed to be, but I would like to take the top cover off to be sure there are no chips remaining afterwards and that adds up to a project that just doesn't quite seem worth it until I have the transmission tunnel out for some other reason...

Removed a non-leaking rear main seal, and replaced it with a new Toyota piece that leaks really well....did not leak during testing...just started hemorrhaging after being installed and operated for three days....oh well.
The other fun thing that I have learned is that somewhere during the run of SM420 transmissions, the top covers changed. Charlie G. was talking to me for a while the other night, and mentioned this...which maked sense, as Jim V and I have the same issue with these 420's sticking in third gear occasionally, and mine will kick out of second under acceleration somewhat regularly. I have at least two more 420's...and think I know where a few more are...I would like to find a later trans top cover (most likely the 65-67 era units) to try and prove some of these theories, but I am not holding out much hope for finding one.

I have heard rumors of this also but haven't been able to confirm. I am using an older top cover on my '67 era ribbed case and have similar issues with gears sticking. It usually happens when coming to a stop. I can't shift out of gear even with the clutch disengaged. It's very frustrating when you have the front bumper pinned against a rock and you can't shift into reverse to back up! I am about ready to switch back to my older style tranny to solve the problem.
Keep us updated on what you find out.
