I want to give a shout out to Pablo, for posting this information. I picked up a lock grommet from the Honda dealer, that's just about perfect for our tailgate lock. Pablo posted this in his build, but I'm adding it here. Good stuff to know and only $2.20.

EDIT... I removed the picture, due to wrong part number. Here's the right one!

Also got all the door card retainer cups from SOR, not so cheap and I needed 72 of them, $1.75 a piece. Glad I didn't need the clips, they are $2.25 a piece. Anyway, all in good shape now.

I've been learning about on board hot water systems and figuring out how to tie it into the heater loop. Got some parts coming, so that's coming up and the tailgate. When it's done, all the glass goes in. Time to get back to work!

Ron, FYI the Auveco Body Hardware #19437 clips work with our interior panels. I paid $17.00 per box of 25.

I'm looking at the Webasto Thermo Top-C for mine to preheat the engine and provide cab heat when camping, is this the type system you're looking at or something different?

No, I'm just making a hot water system for showers. It will tap into the heater hoses and run to a heat exchanger and a 12 volt pump to a shower head. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stainless-S...ting-Studs-Water-Boiler-Radiant-/351148034715

On the clips, all I needed were the plastic female pieces, which I'm sure somebody has them cheaper than what I paid. But, you have to remember, I have a tattoo on my forehead that reads, I PAY DOUBLE. :)

Here's the pump I'm using. http://www.amazon.com/SHURflo-4008-...-E65+3.0+Revolution+Water+Pump#productDetails

Time to get back to work!

Sweet, glad my obserations could help someone else in their quest for Pig!

If those are the same clips that Steve sends out with his door panels, they are a little shorter than the originals, and thus some of the holes in the door panels would have to be closer to the cups. When I put the new door panels on I think I had to use the old clips ~ 50% of the time. Glad I had not lost them!

Pablo,

That's why I saved a pile of the old ones and had them plated. Didn't need any other problems.

I don’t know Steve or what he sends, this is a photo of the two clips if it helps someone needing clips.

New on the left and original on the right.

Ok, let's see here. On the left, in this picture, is Steve's and on the right, a plated old one. Steve is the fella making the door cards and he supplies the new clips with them. They are some what different, but I think guys are using them. Sure looks like JMack's are closer to OEM. I like that company, AUVECO, for many different clips, etc. That's where I found the green clips to rebuild the door handles. Good information to hang onto.

I wanted to include a hot water shower for those extended camping trips and this is what I've come up with. A long way from done, but I've got the main pieces mounted. That's the heat exchanger and the water pump. Got to get the tray powder coated and some hoses made up and I can wrap this up. I'll post up some better pictures when I get it done.

Tomorrow is tail gate day. My Son and buddy are coming out to help. For some reason, I'm more apprehensive about hanging this damn thing, than any other project.

So Ron, will this shower work only with the pig running (to keep warm coolant rolling through the exchanger) or will you have some sort of insulated hot water tank somewhere?

Cool idea, killer execution (as always).

You could certainly use it with a holding tank, but until I use it for awhile and see how it works, good and bad, I'll use it with the motor running. I could fill a bucket up with the hot water and then take a shower later, but either way you will need some type fuel fired heater in order to get the water hot.

Beautiful work Ron (as always)!

You will prevail with the tailgate. I hope my notes are not causing apprehension. It is just a PITA.

I am not sure if this example will make sense... I had to go up in an attic on New Year's Day to install 2 fan mounts. When I got done, I realized it is something I *can* do, but not a job I *want* to do any longer... Not sure if that makes sense? It is w/in your skill set, but I am guessing you will be pleased when it is finished!

Go to it!

Ron as others before have said before your work on this pig is incredible, thanks for all your time documenting the progress!

Question for you, did you calculate the output BTU of your engine at idle and size this hot water system for a set GPM at a set temp? I like the idea but I’m trying to wrap my head around how hot the water will get at what flow rate.

Thanks.

We got the tail gate in and the actual mounting of the gate, really wasn't bad. It was just two of us and our method worked well, BUT when opening the gate nice and slow, the corner caught a big weld in the corner of the body and chipped the paint. Had I thought about it and seen it, could of very easily ground it down. We were able to adjust it up some, still not perfect, at least it doesn't hit anymore. Won't be the last chip!

JMack,

Short answer, no I didn't. I had to laugh a little, because I usually calculate by way of the WAG formula. Seriously, after reading about others and knowing Chevys get up to temp. pretty quick and talking with the heat exchanger people, I bought a 20 plate exchanger. It is a long model, which transfers heat better than the shorter models.. more efficient at idle. The pump I got is a Shurflo that pumps 3 GPM. That's somewhat higher than others, but I can always restrict the flow, without damaging the pump. A stronger pump will pull lake water at a distance better, if needed.

I'm more worried about it being too hot, if it's a problem, I'll plumb in a mixer valve and reduce the temp with some cold water.

Your Cummins may have to idle up a little to bring the temp. up, most guys use the manual throttle to step up the RPMs. It doesn't take much to take a shower or two, figuring @ 2 gals. per shower. One way is to recycle the water back through the exchanger a second time before showering. Pump the water through the shower head into a bucket and pump it back around to heat it some more.

This is all new to me, so we'll learn together.

Pablo,

My list of things I don't want ( WON'T ) do anymore is growing long. Anything that involves hanging off a 32 footer is out! The tailgate really wasn't that bad. As always, the second one will go better. Next time I'll grind down those corner welds! Now, I have to remember how all the guts went in there.

Pablo,
Now, I have to remember how all the guts went in there.

I'm counting on you to document because I have the fear of memory loss given I'm always forgetting where I laid the tool I just had in my hands a minute ago. My disassemble was years ago so there's no way that memory even still exists.

Nik,

I hear that! My Dad says, it don't get any better, either! I'll try to take pictures and put it back right.

Started the tailgate rebuild, today. Let me just say in advance, I didn't take the gate apart, everything came in pieces. Not that it would matter much, but I installed and reinstalled three times! Here's a helpful hint, connect the rods to the locks on each side, before fastening the locks down. You can't get the connecting rods in their holes with them screwed down.

Here's another one, I have two different style handles and the one I had rechromed was the style you can take apart. I didn't think about until I tried to install it. Had it all put back together, on the bench, which is a test of patience at best and realized you can't fit it through the mounting holes while together. Had to take it apart and reassemble inside the gate. Here's a picture of both styles, I guess different years.

The lock grommet from the Honda dealer worked very well ( Thanks Pablo ), you do have to open up the grommet to fit the lock, but I used a Dremel with a sanding drum, took ten seconds, done.

IMG_2769.JPG

bolted up the new license plate light and the 4 wheel emblem and I'm done for the day.

IMG_2779.JPG

If you look at the lower left corner, you'll see the chip in the paint.
