Thats a great pic. Makes me think about the cladding behind the rear wheel weels and mud flaps. Seems they could get damaged. What do others do?

Of course we could go back and talk about the baster!

I think bolt on sliders are the way to go, for what ever reason you can take them off your totaled cruiser(it could happen look) or if you had to put on new cats. I was thinking you could weld on plates to Marlin sliders or MAFs 4plus sliders for bolt ons.

I too thought of this. But by the time you weld on plates and buy the U bolts and get them powder coated you would be up to the same price as Slee. Not saying the Slees are better or worse. Just saying that if you are shopping by price you need to look at the entire price. Hannas are also similiar in price and function.

Personally, I like the idea of being able to buy them raw because my powdercoating on the undersides is shot. I drag those sliders all over the place and I really didn't expect it to last. My bumpers are Hammerited and I like this as after a through dragging through the Idaho lava rocks I can do a quick touch up. My next set of sliders and bumpers will be all silver. Which is possible in the powdercoating industry but nobody offers it as an option.

Hanna will do it for a slight upcharge, I think. I asked about a different color and he was fine with it so you can check.
btw, the powdercoating is THICK and durable. You can spray touch up or wait and re-powdercoat in a few years, the advantage of bolt-on.

btw, these pics are from Hanna's site. My sliders are coming soon tho!

Those are some serious sliders. Very nice work.

To be fair, when we built a pair of sliders for under $200, they were not bolt on, like mine are. Add another $50 for additional steel and harware. They are not powdercoated, or even painted for that price. You gotta have a buddy with a welder, lift, notcher and tube bender. (even a buddy who doesn't contribute to the good of the forum will do) and you are going to spend at least 10 hours. You may also not be happy with certain aspects of fit, finish, welds etc. With Slee or Hanna, that's not an issue.

Some seem to think the welded sliders have advantages over bolt on because they think the U-bolt will drag

... and some of us with welded sliders went weld because we believe it to be stronger than a crappy u-bult :flipoff2:

that said, if i was buying sliders now i would buy from slee, otherwise i'll make my own thanks. hope to finish up a set for an 80 this week for a buddy as a surprise. :flipoff2:

Boy am I glad the Jet's game is over. I can take these earplugs out because Junks stopped shouting!

Damn Jets, I thought they were actually going to win that game, not that I really cared but I just wanted to see New England lose.

As for the sliders, definetly wait and buy (or build) good ones. You will never be sorry, wheeling you often get on things and don't realize how hard you're hitting rocks or even what's down there. With mine, even knowing what I was on I would ask a spotter why the steering feels funny, he's like, oh that's cause the entire side of the vehicle is on the slider, neither front or back tire touching the ground...I'm like OK, that's why you want beefy sliders that can take that abuse over and over...perfect example is in my avatar pic (<---), two tires totally off the ground, the other two with maybe a hundred pounds on them combined, I needed a highlift on the rear bumper there, but the sliders never complained a bit. I have Christo's tube style sliders, which were zinc plated then powder coated or something like that. Under the powder coating it looks like galvanized metal, and not a trace of rust, they work awesome! :D

The ones we made for my 80 are working well and I think they look really nice too.
Made from stronger DOM material, these hold the weght of the truck well.

I have a hard time parting with a lot of money only to scrape it off. Maybe I'm too hard on mine but when I went out to look underneath the rig last night there is no powdercoating left on them on the underside. I actually have pretty deep gouges in them. But I didn't put them on to make them look pretty. There function is to keep dents out.

Paint, powdercoat, latex, spandex...whatever. If you use your sliders for what they're designed to do, it ain't staying on there. I had dents and scrapes all across the underside of mine after my first serious trip. The benefit to having them painted or powdercoated black is that it's pretty easy to touch up with some gloss rattle can black.

I have some bed liner on mine right now, but I know much of that will scrape off on my next trip.

Depending on how tight the trail is, you should be okay with the cladding on the rear quarter panel -- I think I managed one small scratch/scrape on mine. The mudflaps will not last though -- and I think it's best to remove them before any serious wheeling. I kept mine on for a medium difficulty trip and ripped one off while backing up over a small boulder. The cladding will hide some body damage -- I found a small dent under the cladding when I removed it -- couldn't tell from looking on the outside that there was any damage.

I just built sliders last weekend... that being said, i also saw a pair of hanna's sliders last weekend... who's are better? well, let me just say that it was my first time welding. That being said, Mine are way better :-D But seriously. It was 237 for all of the steel, bent em up, cut em up, welded em together, then on to the truck. I paid 13$ in paint. And they look pretty good. Booger welds all over, but they held up on the trails and on the rocks.

I dont have any pictures but what I used was 2 66" 4"x2" square tube 1/8th wall. and then 22 feet of 1.5" diameter 1/8th wall tube and bent and cut accordingly. I put a small hoop type thing at the back of the slider right before it goes in, as to kick my back end out if i'm on a tree. Best design ever... thanks all-pro... and thats it. Pretty simple. It took about 17 hours of work, as me and my friend didnt know exactly what we were doing and didnt want to bother gumby with our dumbness, but managed our way though it. If you've got the right tools, its a very simple job, just a bit time consuming. I'll try and get some pics up. It might be a week or so before I can get to them though.

Here is why you don't want the sissy step bars or running boards. This is from just a slight touch going over a dirt mound. Just imagine if it were rocks!

You can built sliders in 17 hours but it takes a week for you to post pics? I'll tell you what I'll do, you build me some sliders and I'll post your pics :flipoff2:

Hehe.. Well if you're in graduate school, then you're familiar with the going rate. IIRC it's something like $3/hr :D.

LOL, look forward to seeing the pics.
