Since the exhaust systems are different, can you/do you guys run different sliders than the typical gas versions? It seems like the expensive sliders for late model FZJs would be unnecessary.

Cruisin' Offroad (owned by Jason) is up in British Columbia near the WA border. He can make you a set of sliders aimed at diesel 80 or you can fab up your own. I made mine, total bitch as the 80 frames do some pretty wonky stuff. You're right tho, you don't need the catalytic converter protection and all that.

jason's stuff is really nice. i put a set on my 62 and they are very well made. he's really good with the 80 series stuff too

I ended up with FZJ Slee sliders to dodge this section in my shop-fabbed 3" exhaust. This is where the cats are in an fzj, thus the drooping slider mount in those kits.

It has a hanger that is connected to the bracket you see coming off the frame. I had to remove the bracket to install the sliders anyway (that is where it bolts to the frame), so if I were to do it again I would have had this section of exhaust tucked up closer to the body (where the heat shield is) and would have been fine with non-fzj sliders. I'm not sure how it looks with stock exhaust but if it runs above the rocker seam you should be fine with a bolt-on, non-fzj kit.

Jason...By far the most experienced with the diesel armor
Yup.

think about upgrading your exhaust at all?
if so, run it inside the frame rail, you get a much better path for the exhaust, far fewer bends, it can be kept much tighter to the floor than the stock exhaust, and there'd be nothing in the way of sliders. ;)

I still have my Slee sliders, with the Cat setup on the right. My exhaust has been run inside the frame, so no need for that design. Though the cat protection and supports hang low, I have not had any issues wheeling. All said, if I were to go for new ones, I would definitely go with the HDJ ones from Jason...just have other priorities to spend $ on first.

The previous owner put a 2.5" exhaust in it that's tucked up at the same height as the frame rails. One wierd thing is that the exhaust come off the manifold outside the frame. Then it hits a small muffler and turns 90 degrees inboard. It makes another 90 once it's inside the frame and goes back to another muffler. Is that routing unusual? I'll try to post up some pictures of what I'm talking about...

No, sounds like the factory exhaust route

Really poxy design!
I can't understand why people follow the same path with a new exhaust, there's so much room for improvement

Wow, that is a crazy design!

So I finally got around to getting sliders for my HDJ81 and contacted Jason @ Cruisin... He's doing a lot of builds now and isn't doing sliders. Anyone have any other sources they would recommend for these? If not, any bolt-on ones that would fit with a stock exhaust?

Depends on where in the Gorge you are, there's a guy in The Dalles that does a lot of custom work on Toyotas (80s series included) if not, lots of LandCruiser fab shops etc... in Bend.

Thanks - I'm in Stevenson, WA so no too far from The Dalles. Always looking for an excuse to go to Bend though... I've got a friend in the Gorge who is itching to fab some, and I may go that route too, but wanted to see if there were any off the shelf ones recommended before going custom. I'll post back on what i do in case others are looking for a set for the HDJs since Cruisin may not be in that business any more.

I ordered some from White Knuckle Offroad a few weeks ago. Still waiting on delivery though (website says 6-8 week turnaround). Per John from WKO, they can make some to accommodate the HDJ81.

Looking forward to hearing about fitment when they arrive. I pulled the running boards off my HDJ81 and want to add armor.

I contacted 4x4 Labs and they require exhaust modifications to make theirs fit, FYI.

Bringing back this slider thread... I have a 1994 HDJ 80 that I am looking for sliders for. Any updates since last year ?
