Does anyone have pictures of a side exit exhaust,
i have seen a few with the pipe coming out from under the front sill,
never had a chance to talk to the owners or have a look.
what is the idea of this and does it help with performance.

will it be very loud .
thanks in advance..
 
My first thought was the emissions, but seeing that you are from Scotland, i guess it wont matter.
Performance will not be helped, but if you like that look, go for it.

If you exit the side, be sure to do it just before the rear wheel, and fumes will get crazy bad in the cab if you do it closer to the front.

Don't open your rear windows anymore...

Be aware about a few things:

1. Exhaust fumes entering truck through the rear windows. Don't open them anymore as someone noted.

2. Water crossings should be scratched off your list of your wheeling adventures; with a side exit especially one that twists forward as the one that Tarpage posted a pic of it is extremely easy for water to rush up the exhaust tubing and flood and stall the engine. Not good in the middle of a fast flowing stream.

I know a friend has one on a diesel 80. Its not too nosiey and exits just before the rear wheel.

Looks a lot like the picture above.

I'm not sure how much backpressure it's comparable between diesel and gassers .. but I'm not really worried about the water crossing with my 3" exhaust .. anycase it depends how much river crossing you do ..

And in the pic it looks like the outlet it's pointing to the front .. but really not, it's mostly pointing down .. ( when it's installled )

This is news to me. I thought your exhaust always had enough pressure to keep water out but now that you say that I could see how it would be slightly possible for water to enter.:meh:

Not just slightly possible, extremely likely; think of how heavy water is compared to air (exhaust gas) and then think how powerful a fast flowing stream pushes on you. I drove a 454 equipped suburban (pretty powerfully modified too) when I was in Central America with side exits and even that thing (as long as it was and as powerful as it was) was totally terrible for river crossings; you almost had to floor the thing to prevent water from flooding the engine if you had to travel perpendicular to the flow of the river. Not good. Anyway if liftman isn't attempting any water crossings he probably won't worry about this. Talking from experience here though not theory. :cheers:
 
I tried a side exhaust on my fj62 right behind the rear tire and hated it. The gasses would frequently drift into the cabin even if just the front windows were open, if you were traveling at very low speeds or stopped and idling (ie, 90 percent of wheeling conditions) and there was a breeze from the rear.

I had mine routed to the side for years and go sick of having to cut it shorter every time I hit the trail.

It exited right behind the RR wheel. I now have it dumping straight back with a slight down turn and haven't had a problem yet.
