Hello, I am in the market for a fj60. I have located one near my residence and its cheap. (<1000) It needs some body work and some mechanical work. My father looked at it and told me the rocker panels and rear quarters need replaced. The body mounts are in need of replacing. The frame is in good shape all glass is intact and the interior is in good shape. The owner also states it has a vaccum leak possibly from a bad spacer gasket on the carburetor. 136k miles on the odometer. My question is. Should i buy it or should i pass. I looked on cruiser parts and the rocker panels would cost me 300 plus shipping and instalation. I'm not concernedf about pristeen body shape but i dont want the body falling off the frame. Thanks for your help in my first fj purchase.

The body shouldn't fall off the frame. I would buy it for a beater only. Wouldn't buy it to restore unless you've got a lot of money. You probably could find a 60 for about the same price that doesn't need engine work but that thing your looking at is low miles to me. pretty much one of my rear quaters is gone and I don't care.

If your going for nice panels it would be better off paying a little more for a nice one. SUV's are on sale right now and the 60 is the best bang for buck Land cruiser IMHO.

Sounds like a good buy for a parts vehicle.

The mileage is pretty low really,

The Body work (to do a good job), will be easily twice what you're paying for the car.

What would be ideal is if you could find another one with a great body, Bad motor and Shot interior, then you could put together one good one!

Post your location and what you have budgeted for the project. That will help people estimate what a good cruiser would go for in your market, and how much cushion you're allowing for repairs on a given rig.

Good luck and welcome.

All FJ 60s are money pits...Rusty FJ60 are SERIOUS money pits. Like the man said, buy it for a beater or parts donor only. If you want something nicer, don't start here. Look for something better.

I had an '88 I bought for $1900. It was nice. 4k later it was really nice. Then the gas tank went ka-put. Replaced that, and sold it for $3500. I got my use out of it, lost money, but I don't care. I would do it again in a second.

I agree this is not going to be a good truck. i am importing a few engines from Venezuela.... I'm looking to dump the 2f and put something a little better into it. i think I'm passing on this beater and going with one in better condition to begin with. Although i am still going to take a look for myself when i get over there next weekend....if i can talk him into a few hundred bucks then i could part it out to some guys around here for cheap parts.
I live in Omaha, NE area. I don't see many of these cruisers around. More of the 80's than the 60's (i know i know big shocker). I really appreciate your help on this and my other cruiser adventures. I want to spend 3-4k to get a truck then 2-3 more in drive train upgrades. any more than that and the wife will KEEEEL me.

welcome:flipoff2: You will soon find out that your 60 series will be a slowwwww money pit.

well.....at least the wife will know where the money is going.....not that she will know why its going. :wrench:  :wrench: repeat.

I would've done the auxiliary transmission cooler earlier rather than later on my 62. Also, I would have done more to preventive cleaning and waxing. I didn't expect rust to be much of a problem in Colorado, but I was wrong.

I'll probably get flamed for this but why not look at the FJ62. People don't like the headlights on them and that they are automatic trans, but it has the 3FE fuel injected and has overdrive. the years are 88-90. It has enough motor for me. I can cruise down the hwy at 70-75mph no problem. In my 40 with the 1:1 gear ratio it's making a lot of noise that fast.

I hope no one flames you..... I have been speaking to some people about the fj60-62 and the opinions im getting is its easier to swap the engine from a carbureted machito than the fuel injected variety. my goal with this venture is to just have a solid wheeler that may not be the best looking truck but it could go anywhere and if it gets tipped i'm not going to cry about it. The fj62 does intrigue me but i would prefer a manual trans.... thanks for all the replies this place seems nicer than other car forums i've been on.... and if i may(perhaps i havent earned the right yet) :flipoff2: ....LOL i love that emoticon.......

It's not a slow SUV but a fast tractor:bounce::bounce::bounce:and a money pit, but ya gotta love it.

What are you importing? Inquiring minds need to know...

If you are seeking a clean "host" 60 series, look out west in Cali. You can find them on Craigslist with asking prices ranging from $1200 (bad motor) to $3500 clean and well kept.

For me personally, I prefer to start with little or no rust. Body work in my experience is a can-o-worms.

Rick
