Just as the title says....i got a quote today from my local Delray Toyota (Southeast Toyota) and they want $2,180! That is for only the timing belt, water pump and seals....Does that sound crazy? Does not include tensioner, belt, or thermostat...i am sure those will extra. I kind of want a Toyota dealer to do the work, but also open to other suggestions.

Furthermore, I am open to go travel to the west coast of Florida or even North Carolina for a vacation and get it done while there. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Big misconception that Dealership does good work, i opened my dealer serviced vehicle to find a couple hack jobs that i had to fix.

Find someone on mud who's done this job many times locally, supply the parts (maybe 300-350) for oem parts, and labor shouldn't be more than $400

Makes perfect sense to me! I will call one of the local Toyota independent shops that i have had friends take their trucks to. Thanks for the idea. Open to more ideas in South Florida (Palm Beach county)>

You might want to peek at the 60 series section's Cruiser Mechanics by State for some leads on LC/LX independents

Do you think more likely to do good work though? not all service departments created the same, we are talking hundreds of dealers. Can't forget their warranty and willingness of many dealers to make it right for any issues and they have the financial backing to really try and make it right.

I personally go to local cruiser shop when i can't do it myseld but wouldn't hesitate to go to dealer if only option, better then a random indy.

It's a toss up, there are some really good indy shops out there. I'm a mechanic but some things on my Benz i cannot fix i send it to a localy Indy who i know and trust. Much more than the goons at the dealership that messed up one of the warranty job. As for my LX, it was serviced at Lexus all its life, everything was done there including light bulbs and wipers. Some goon did not set the preload for the bearings properly, he used a chisel to loosen/tighten the lock nut, several bolts on the skid plate wasn't tightened all the way i had to track down the rattle. They have zero clue about neutral AHC pressure because i saw shocks and accumulators were replaced and fluid flushed but the pressure was way too high. At that point i opened up the TB cover and check their work and thank god that was done right, and the seals replaced as well.

Spot on with that price. Toyota near me did mine for $750 and they quoted it over the phone and nothing changed except they got me for an oil change when I brought it in. It was new to me, and I didn't know when it was last done, so I did it.

06-07 VVTI cam seals are a lot more labor
^ Yes- on VVT the cams have to come out for the seals to be changed. Lots of labor $$.

If they arent leaking- leave them alone.

Rennaisance Auto (Cary), Phil’s Toy (Cary) or Wasp Auto (Durham)

Phil’s did my timing belt with Aisin/OEM parts for around 1.5k or so a few years ago.

David at JACS (Japanese Auto Care Specialists) in Tamarac (northwest broward county) did the job on my 00 LX. He does awesome work, very skilled mechanic (and my coworker). His labor rates are very good as well. Tell him Tyrone sent you. He'll get whatever level of parts you want (OEM, aftermarket, ebay, etc) to fit your budget. Also did an axle swap on my tundra, and replaced the entire exhaust system and removed AHC on my LX.

I don't know how serious you are about North Carolina, but I had my 180K timing belt/WP service done at H&H Automotive in Charlotte for ~$1,100 IIRC. That shop is chock full of Cruisers all the time so you can rest assured that you're getting competent service, and it's a good price.

That's insane, my Toyota dealer did the same job for $840 and that should be based flat rate time.

Just looked back at my records. Service included TB, WP, idler, tensioner, seals and thermostat for $1,050. I don't know what the dealer did on yours, but insane is a pretty strong term for a service that routinely is in the ~$1,000+ range.

Ended up taking it to Eric's Wrench in Delray Beach, FL. Super nice people and good quality service. Glad i did this service,as my water pump was leaking slowly out of the weep hole.
