Well this sucks. I was washing the truck today and noticed the top of the spoiler is all scratched up. Only 400 miles on the truck, so I’m pretty upset.

No idea how it even happened. I would have noticed if it scraped the garage. Since it’s all the way at the top it’s not that noticeable. But my OCD wants to get it fixed now. What do you all think? Touch it up and call it a day? Get the section repainted at a body shop?

That's the spoiler, not the tailgate.

Might be able to detail that out with a buffer and an aggressive cut compound.

My bad, I meant spoiler. Just above the tailgate. Corrected the title, thanks.

Yeah maybe a shop can do sort it out without repainting the whole spoiler.

Potentially there when you bought it? Back into any tight quarters recently and maybe scratched it without noticing? Teenagers in the house? Haha

Edit: or any valet recently?

No teens in the house. I do park in an underground garage but I park it myself so I would have noticed. Unless the parking attendant moved it while I wasn’t there.

And yeah possible it was there from the dealership and I didn’t notice, but no way they’d take responsibility now.

Time for a ute conversation

Trade it for a new one.

Just kidding.

I can’t even see the top of my wind deflector/spoiler thingy, and wouldn’t be half surprised to see it was scratched if I could.

I doubt it impairs function, and if you can’t see it, maybe just live with it?

Yeah it’s only cosmetic and not too visible unless you’re looking for it. I’m pissed since the truck is basically brand spanking new.

I even just had the front bumper covered with Xpel film. Such irony that now the rear end gets scratched up!

If you get an estimate for repair or have a shop do the repair, make sure they don't code the estimate or the work to the VIN. Any body work could show up on Carfax if the VIN is involved. Same with the dealer---that would show up on service records and it's not worth potentially losing value or causing any questions over some fancy pinstripes.

3” lift & 35’s so no one sees it unless they're on a ladder 👌🏼

Exactly. How would I know if the shop codes the estimate to the VIN? Just ask them to do it under the table and hope they don’t record it?

Take off the spoiler, bring it to the body shop, leave it for repairs and drive away.

Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic? I could try removing it but not sure how easy that would be.
I replaced my spoiler last year. You need to pop off the top and side plastics on the inside of the hatch. And then, if I remember correctly, there are 4 bolts holding it in.

Mine is beat to... in the same place. If you have it repaired will probably just get scratched again soon. I vote leave it.

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds like it’s not too difficult to remove the spoiler. I wonder if the body shop would still ask for the VIN so they could match the paint color. It’s Blizzard Pearl, I guess they could just go with that.

Fair point that it may get damaged again. But damn, the truck is virtually new so I wasn’t ready for pinstripes just yet.

I’d get it fixed if it was mine. There are a couple door dings that came in my used 2015 and I want to get them fixed if I can without having paint work done. If I dropped the long green on a new one I’d want it to be perfect until I messed it up. My guess is it came like that unless other people drive it that may not notice draggng the car on something. Those people are out there, sometimes we live with them.

My 2013 has a bit more run time and so take this FWIW... we consider the truck as a tool to reach places and do things we otherwise could not; and with that we accept some level of depreciation. We happen to have put some fairly deep gouges on the top of that part of truck because we load a 17’ canoe during summer time. The truck is treated as a multi-tool and we are proud to use it for many purposes. With that, we accept the occasional minor blemish. That said, we took a punch to the bumper when a motorcycle decides to rear end us and felt we had to repair and so to each their own.

enjoy the ride. Don’t overamp about a blemish, but keep it cool don’t forget to represent the legacy of this great machine!

I just took a long look at the scratches in your pic. The location of them, it does not look possible to do that while driving. Unless you were reversing through a forest. Have you carried anything in the roof rack? They don’t look deep and there are lots of small scratches like someone dragged a rope or a strap across the spoiler. I think the most probable cause is the truck driver that delivered it to the dealership did something with a strap or tie down. Or it happened in transport on the train from the port to wherever. I assume the rest of the vehicle is still pristine?

400 miles, I’d have the dealer look at it. They might replace the spoiler or have it repainted. It depends on how accommodating of a dealer you have. It’s not like a hood or a quarter panel where you want to preserve factory paint even if there is a blemish, it’s a chunk of plastic bolted to the upper hatch. I’d get it fixed, preferably for free!
