Scratched my spoiler!

Mine was scratched when I mounted the ski box too far back one year. Opening the tailgate the spoiler would rub on the box and scuffed it pretty good before I noticed. I live with it since you can’t really see it. It’s an 08 tho.

I just took a long look at the scratches in your pic. The location of them, it does not look possible to do that while driving. Unless you were reversing through a forest. Have you carried anything in the roof rack? They don’t look deep and there are lots of small scratches like someone dragged a rope or a strap across the spoiler. I think the most probable cause is the truck driver that delivered it to the dealership did something with a strap or tie down. Or it happened in transport on the train from the port to wherever. I assume the rest of the vehicle is still pristine?

400 miles, I’d have the dealer look at it. They might replace the spoiler or have it repainted. It depends on how accommodating of a dealer you have. It’s not like a hood or a quarter panel where you want to preserve factory paint even if there is a blemish, it’s a chunk of plastic bolted to the upper hatch. I’d get it fixed, preferably for free!
This makes sense. Very likely it was there when I took delivery. The rest of the vehicle is pristine. I haven’t used the roof rack to carry anything.

I’ll stop by the dealership and talk to the manager. Let’s see what they say.

Regardless, this is bothering you, so get it fixed. All this stuff about the car losing value if the spoiler is repaired, or removing the spoiler yourself, is not something I would worry about on an LC with 400 miles on it that you plan to have for a long time. I can't tell you how many times I have scratched spoilers on my 200s. I have been driving a 200 of some sort since 2009 except one time when I lost my mind and drove a RR for less than a year. I have scratched spoilers most often when opening the top of the clamshell in the garage, or transporting things on top, etc. It will all be good!

I just called the salesman I purchased the vehicle through and told him the situation. He said he’ll do whatever he can to resolve this, but can’t promise they’ll cover the repair since some time has passed and there are some miles on the car.

I’m driving up to Maine tomorrow and was planning to take the LC, but now I’ll just leave it in the garage and take our other truck instead. No sense putting any more miles on it if there’s a chance the dealer will fix it on their dime. The more I think about it, I feel this must have happened prior to me taking possession of the truck. Not holding my breath, but I hope the dealer works with me.

I even opened the hatch inside my garage to see if there’s any way it could have hit the door or ceiling. The spoiler doesn’t make contact anywhere, so there’s no way it happened in my garage.

My rear spoiler scratched also. However, I know who did it and unfortunately I have to look at the guy every morning in the mirror. Kind of burned me up, since I had no one to blame except him. Backed into the garage door when I was in a hurry and didn't let it get all the way up. The garage door got the worst of it, and was not cheap to fix.

I was already mad at him since he is also the same A-hole who had walked by my pristine Land Cruiser earlier with a chainsaw and put a millimeter scratch in the paint when a certain yellow Lab decided he needed some love and ran into said A-hole.

I wish mine was still pristine but love her just the same and the functionality is still 100%.

Wrap the top yourself. Similar color or accent color. Easy job order from Amazon.

Quick update. Spoke to the dealer and they will do nothing. Said too much time has passed so it’s not a point of sale issue.

Guess I’m not surprised. I was hoping they’d at least do something to work with me, but they basically just blew me off. I’ll probably take it to a body shop and get an estimate.

You can buy an OEM painted spoiler direct from Toyota for $500-550. I would buy a new one, leave it on the shelf, and leave the scratched one in place to take future abuse. Best of both worlds. 🍻

Now that’s a solid idea! I didn’t realize I could get a brand new painted spoiler for that price. Are you sure that’s correct?

If the body shop can do a quick fix for cheap I might go that route, otherwise $500 for a brand new part sounds like the way to go.

Here you go - find some free shipping and be done with it. 🍻

Or just drive it and enjoy it. Those parts will be readily available for years, should you ever need them. Honestly, are you ever even going to see scratches up there?

Nope, most people probably wouldn't even see the scratches unless they knew where to look. But my OCD knows the scratches are there...

I think you'll be really surprised at what a little M205 [M105 if necessary] and a couple Lake Country pads [Orange and Blue] on a DA will do for you. I had to clean up a scrape on my bumper left by someone pulling out in a hurry, and I'm kinda bummed I can't justify a Dissent rear now hah.

If the garage or the dealer has a high res camera, you maybe able to see what day is got scratched?

Quick update. Stopped by my local auto body shop last week to show them the scratches. I’ve worked with one of their employees, Alexis, in the past and had a great experience.

So Alexis comes out, says how nice my Land Cruiser is, then goes in the shop to grab some materials. He comes out with some rubbing compound and what looks like fine grit sandpaper, and in a matter of a few minutes removes basically all the scratches from the spoiler. He wouldn’t even accept any money for it.

The scratches are barely noticeable now, even if you’re looking close. Big thanks to Frankie’s Auto Body in Edison, NJ. These guys are awesome.
