I just installed my icon suspension and am now looking for some meatier tires. My 5th gen T4R had 285 70 17s, but I felt myself longing for more. What's the tallest tire I can go without the BMC? I'm hoping I can go 34" or maybe 35s without crazy mods.

Please school me!!

34 or 35 you have to do the BMC and the seam hammer and clearancing of the fender liner. You may even have to do that with a 285 tire.

There's a spreadsheet that has tire/wheel combos with comments about rubbing and mods: 2003-2009 GX470 Master Mod List.xlsx

First, the +25 offset on the Lexus OEM wheels makes the bigger tires rub. Maybe a different wheel like a 17x8 with zero offset can help reduce rubbing on the bigger tires. I have a 17x9 -12 wheel.

Second, sometimes the UCAs will rub, so watch out for that. Might need to replace. I went with TotalChaos UCAs

Finally, the wheel fender liner will need some trimming. Just a little trimming for me.

All this happened to me and I'm only running 285/70/17s and they are like 32.7" tall

Not sure what happened with 3 posts in one from my phone

What does BMC mean?

Thanks. No BMC for me!

i had the shop set the caster to 4* to fit the 285 70 17 falken wildpeak at3ws. According the falken website these are 33" exactly.

I need to do some fender liner movement, but all is well. Also, time to rip off those side steps and see if my 5th Gen T4r sliders will mount up ok.

Do you have spacers? The stock OEM wheels have a +25mm offset and should cause your tires to rub on the frame on a full turn. The liner can be pushed out to avoid rubbing the liner, but you will need to do something about rubbing against the frame.

Not installed. I didn't notice any rub marks apart from the fender liners. I'll look into it more this weekend. Curious to know if the frame you're referring to and body mount are one and the same?

Maybe...my terminology might be off. My tires were rubbing against the frame as far as I could tell. Not sure if this is called the body mount. I'll try to take pictures this weekend of my rubbing of what I call the frame.

That is the body mount. BMC (body mount chop) is common as your tire gets bigger

OP- what suspension set up are you running?

Nice tires, I was trying to get some of these when I was shopping for tires but they didn't have any left in my size.

Running icon remote Resis up front with icon 2.0 remote resis in the rear. Just did the rear shocks (with rear airbag trick) and will put springs on later. I kind of enjoy the novelty of the airbags, but the ride quality sucks. If I hit a bump the front absorbs well, as soon as the rear tires hit it hops.

Update on the fitment with no spacers. The 285s were rubbing on the remote reservoirs so I threw the spacers on. In doing so I began rubbing on the body mount. I did the BMC, but am still rubbing, albeit slightly at full lock and under brake dive, on the pinch weld seam on the drivers side. I took a grinder to it, but I will use BFH to get it flush to the inner fender.

From what I've read, you can do the chop without welding a cap on, I opted to take advantage of a good buddy's new found welding hobby.

I'm a bit annoyed that it's taking this much work to get the 33s to fit correctly,
but it's pretty fun holding a grinder to a Lexus.

So if anyone is still surfing this thread, would you recommend avoiding any tires larger than stock size if I do NOT yet have a suspension lift? Mine is a slow build and I'll do some light beach/off road next 1-2 years before I do a lift. thx

This is a difficult question to answer, especially since you haven't given a specific size. W/o a lift a bigger tire will rub. Even with a lift, you could still run into rubbing with bigger tires. If you are stock right now, I would say a 265/70r17 is the safest choice. And there are tons of used sets in this size for sale. There might be slight rubbing but nothing that you have to worry about.

Finally, I'd say the best attitude toward bigger tires is whatever you do, expect it to rub and for you to do some fitting. I'm doing the same thing you are too! I ran 265/70's on stock and then 285/70's with a lift and it rubbed, however no BMC needed. Hope this helped.

Great, thank you and yes that is helpful. Currently it has 265/65s on it with the stock 17" rim and from what I can tell when I bought it it was just a grocery getter so I assume 265/65 is the stock tire size it came with. Yes I realized reading this thread that even with a lift people are having to do some mods to reduce/eliminate rubbing. Thanks!
