noted... GODDAM $hithole salty words... 20 yrs ago I would have re typed it about 100 times... over and over... just to piss somebody off. please dont let some daisy ruin your story for the rest of us.

I think many of us have very strong reactions to this :censor:. I think Lee was just trying to be respectful to all his audience, not rile others up. He said he's going to tell it like it was. This is about Lee's story and great storytelling. I hope we can keep things on track here by focusing on what's most important. Nothing to be gained by alienating people for their linguistic preferences.

Hey, I never intended to start a controversy. Allow me to clarify a couple of things.

I received two emails, both of which politely suggested that the old timer's language was inappropriate for the tech forum. They asked if I couldn't have told the same story, without using the words they found offensive. My reply was that no, changing what the old guy said would change the story. He was a colorful character, and that's just the way he spoke. No big deal in my opinion.

After sleeping on it, I thought that possibly there were more than two readers who were offended. My solution is to issue a language warning in the future, if and when needed. If anyone who's sensitive sees the warning, they should stop reading. I intend to keep writing the tale as it happened.

As far as I know, no one has "officially" reported my posts. I haven't heard from Woody or any mods, so there has been no attempt at censorship. None. In fact, this thread only continues to exist because Woody and Poser have allowed it to stay in 40 tech. Had it been moved to chat, or worse, s-chat, the thread would have self destructed long ago.

Concerning the old guy. Personally, I didn't find his language all that salty. It's not like he was dropping F-bombs, or trying to shock me. I was in the service with sailors who couldn't get through a sentence without turning the air blue with profanity. The old man in Butte was a choir boy compared to them.

Looking ahead, I can't think of any :censor: language coming up, except my own, the next time I break down.

Thanks for the support.

Lee

I just got caught up on the chapter. Very good, keep going. On the language...don't get me started, either put in ear plugs or wear a blindfold (the latter would be preferrable). Great story Lee.

ahh...i forgot the anticipation of seeing NEW next to your thread.

I try not to cuss, I understand those that are offended by it, but agree with the majority that it is PART of the story, LEE's story, and we are along for the ride. No one has a gun to their head when logging in to mud, then to this thread, and then to the latest entries so.......

carry on Commander

Careful everyone, too much chat and not enough Rustbucket!

I don't have a 40......yet but I have learned a lot of tech about them, ex if roof seal leaks use duck tape, I think that happened in CO.

I'm a Super-Mod, want me to issue an infraction?:D:D:D

Heck no. I want you to protect the thread, just like we agreed. That's why I send you all that protection money. Right?

Quit whining or the Old Timer will punch you!
That actually reminds me of a story about this Old Timer I worked with before he retired. One day I was playing my "Rock" music to loud for him and he yelled at me to turn it down, which I did. A few days later he was blasting his "Oldies" music and in fun I told him to turn it down. He walked into the isle between our work stations and said "what"? So I stepped into the isle and proceeded to tell him to turn down his music, to which he promptly slapped me in the face. "That's just a taste" he said with a smile on his face. He turned and walked back to his work space laughing leaving me standing there chuckling at his fortitude. "Old Man Jimmy" had some stories too, he was on a Navy ship during the Bay of Pigs...interesting to say the least.

Dammit! I caught up to the storyteller! :bang:

Funny.... I haven't been glued to Mud the way I used to be. Just been too busy. I only seem to get on and surf while I'm supposed to be watching my son at football camp or killing time elsewhere. During one of those rare episodes I notice this "Rust Bucket" thread show up in the stickies. I ignored it for quite some time. And then one day, with nothing better to do, I figured what the heck... I'd check it out. I've got time. Probably just another guy fixin' rust issues. If you've seen one, you've seen them all. Right? Well, thats not quite true, I tend to learn something from each of those rusty threads. But you get the idea, I wasn't expecting much. I saw the original poster was that Sea Knight guy. I had read a few of his postings in various threads and didn't recall him being one of those loudmouth type know-it-all guys spouting off about nothing. Or one of those guys who just posts to say "you're awesome" or "that's soooooo cool" in order to pad their post count. Actually, as I thought about it, didn't he contact me for something or other? Pretty sure he did. Can't remember what it was exactly but I seem to recall I couldn't help him out and I felt bad that I had to disappoint him.

Anyway.... I hit the link and quickly skim down several posts. A couple pictures of decent 40's. Check. How many replys...are...there...... over 900! Wow, its got staying power. Check. I see posts from several community regulars that I know to be the stand up solid type. Check. There's Sully73FJ40, tucker74, TCSTARK, kling-on, DSRTRDR among others. I think to myself, "this guy is connected. I had better give this thread a chance or I'll be missing out". I scroll up and dive in. Talk about a read you can't "put down"!

This thread has been and continues to be, without a doubt, the most unique thing I have come accross on this great site full of unique things. I believe the layout, the story, the tempo, the subject matter, the vibe, the feedback.......... all of it is just sooooo cool!!!!

Lee, you are awesome! And I thank you.

I think during my youth all those salty old guys lived in our town, even worked for most of 'em at one endeavor or another . Talk about being taught the meaning of Life , let me tell ya'....

I thank every one of them every day and even try to pass on some of their lessons to the new generations as they sure need the help .

If the language is a problem, buy a filter .
