Let me ask about trails for SAS #9

I plan on leading at least one trail ride. It’s a standard loop in the area and it’s a 60 to 70 mile ordeal.
My question to all of you in attendance is, is that too long of a day? Is there any interest in all day runs?

If it is not a big deal then I will continue with planning the ride. If it’s too much for a day I’ll make plans for a different adventure .

In short, the trail is the Alpine Loop. Corkscrew, Cinnamon and Engineer.

Thanks and let me know

This is a lot of road to cover for a large group but it is possible to achieve in one day if you keep your pace up. My family used to do that route every year in one day. I believe that Rob (@matzell) did this last year and he told me that they were out very late. I’d recommend leaving at 7 am.

I am still considering a 160 mile 2-day round trip that covers much of this ground plus an additional leg to Stony Pass / Carson. Maybe we should team up?

Here is a link to details about the overnight route if you are interested. You may want to do both as this does not include Animas Forks to Cinnamon Pass.

Alpine Loop is an all day affair. Plan on leaving early, lower Miniral Creek is tight but once you get past it the trail opens up and is well worth it. Good group photo op at Oden Point. Lunch in Lake City, run over Cinnamon Pass to Animas Forks. From there folks can bail to Silverton and take 550 back but California, Hurrican and Corkscrew are really cool also.
I wouldn't do it on Wednesday though. Group Photo and Raffle will be that evening.

It was long but doable. There is only one gas station in Lake City, North end, that we found. If you have never done it, you should knock it off the bucket list. We stopped in Ouray for dinner as it was a little late but not dark. I think we left camp around 8am but I would leave earlier to do it again.

What i have in mind is a stretched Aqualu FJ45 cab, on a Roadster Shop chassis, with a flatbed.

Not sure on powertrain. Gearing is more important than HP for what I want it to do.

Basically Toyota look, without dicking up classic car parts.
Don't get your wheel base to long . I like to in come in around 115ish for 40 inch tires. My last buggy I stretched out to 120 for a little more room and more stable going up or coming down steep climbs and drops. The down side I would get center hung every now and then. I love the stretched fj 45 look and anyone taller than 4 ft needs it haha. 4.3 gm v6s are great for a power plant if your not wanting to go LS . If you have a light foot you can still run mini cases dbled up behind it, if your not waiting to drop the big bucks on a atlas case add some locked 80 axles into the mix.. NICE.. The 112 inch wheel base buggy that tired to follow me on this line did a frt flip. Better get back to SAS stuff before someone yells at us ..

I'm interested in doing the entire loop in one day if you need a partner

@BigHighBlue yes, someone to be a tail gunner would be great.

I would like to keep the group small, @ 10 vehicles if possible unless there is an overwhelming interest.
As far as fuel goes, most LandCruisers carry enough gas to make this loop with out a refill?
I’ve done all of this before and there are a million options along the way. I would like to keep it straight forward. Not planning an overnight but drivers should come prepared. No long lunch breaks in Lake City, plan on a brown bag lunch breaks. If anything I would hit the Lake City Brewery for one. 🍺.
Was planning a counter clockwise loop so to finish on Engineer.

Looks like either a Tuesday or Thursday event.

This what I know for now!

@Mike Shull

Team up possibly? Not sure about the over night? That would be one less night at camp and I may miss out on something typically outrageous that happens at a SAS night at camp!

Sounds good. I'm a diesel so I always stay in the rear...keeping a small group is a good idea. I haven't done the full loop before but there's plenty of knowledge in the group to answer any questions. I don't think fuel will be an issue.

Are you telling me there was some a-hole that smoked out the whole west side of Imogene? Are there pictures of this? Asking for a friend 😬
Hey maybe I can give you a taste of your own medicine!
I hope not though, I’ve tried to build it clean and quiet, but it is what it is.

@devo I'll be leading a small group on a very long day trip as well. I think it's fine. The length of the trip will naturally thin the herd, so the group size won't balloon. Those who are interested will join, those who don't want to be gone all day will go on a shorter run. If you're worried can can limit it to the first X people to sign up - something I'll probably do. I would carry on and not worry about it. Like Casey said, just don't do it on Wednesday, since we all need to be back for the photo and raffle.

Oh that’s interesting. Never would have thought of that. Still fueling but not much air?
My understanding is the back pressure from the engine braking pushes some oil into the cylinder which smokes a lot when it burns. Don't know if that's true but what I was told. As soon as I get to a level area and put my foot on the gas it clears right up

Jim, never been on a run with you if you have open spots I'd love to chat about what you're up to
