Hey guys, I searched first but didn't find it - can anyone tell me how old a truck has to be to not have to pass an emmissions test in Santa Fe County? I would like to de-smog my 1980 FJ40 which is perfectly legal here in Texas but we are in the process of (slowly) building a house in rural Santa Fe County and plan to move there permanently in a couple of years.

Thanks!

EDIT: a subsequent Google search indicates that that only Albuquerque/Bernalillo County has any emmissions testing at all, is this still correct? Thanks.

That is correct. I currently live in northern Santa Fe county.

Thanks Vince, I appreciate that. I'm going to start the de-smog as soon as I finishing repairing my wife's car.

Welcome! Look us up when you get here for good, or if you want to wheel before then.

Thanks Evan, will do. Our place is not that far from you, in the San Pedro Mountains east of 14 and north of 344. Maybe you could clue me in to where the local repeaters are too - I'm hoping there might be one on top of the Sandias?

There are a large number of repeaters on Sandia Crest. The NM repeater system is one of the best in the country... maybe one of the best in the world. There are linked repeaters on mountain tops throughout the state. UHF, VHF, and APRS digis. The coverage also extends into parts of the adjoining states.

I hope so too, but be warned: they're like Lay's potato chips and Land Cruisers - bet you can't have just one! :)

Thanks Mike, that is great to know. Last time I was there with my mobile radio I didn't take the time to scan for anything.

We have a growing number of licensed amateur operators in the club. A few have prepared and/or completed their General ticket. I think we are around 10 members now with several that have said they were going to get licensed soon.

Good deal! I am slowly converting several of the guys I wheel with here in Texas. I have a General Class license myself but only use 2m 95% of the time. I'm going to put up as big of a tower as Santa Fe County will let me on our place there and hang some HF antennas on it too.

Can't wait to get there and join your chapter. Do you have an associate membership category for out-of-state folks by any chance?

Yes. Just send your $250 lifetime dues payment to Beowulf@PayPal.com

:D

j/k No associate membership but you're welcome to hang here on our little part of 'Mud. Just so ya know... there are several members of HDC that are less than friendly to Texans. We have to ski with Texans and their big haired women during the winter and well... we stereotype you guys. FWIW, I moved here from Houston about 20 years ago and they still treat me like crap and pick on me and make jokes about my truck. :sniff: :sniff: :crybaby:

Lee -

Great to hear - as the East Mountains go, we're practically neighbors. We usually try to host one of our monthly club meetings in the summer so we can hang out on the deck and talk about Cruisers. Keep an eye on the website for meeting times and maybe it will be when you are passing through. Or just let us know when you'll be around - we'd be happy to have you and your family over for a visit.

Evan

P.S. As I'm sure you've already figured out, you can't take Beowulf too seriously...

I'm used to the ribbing; it's way worse in Colorado where they're serious about it. The irony is that I grew up in Colorado but of course get no credit for it since I have Texas plates now. All the Front Range is way too crowded and the whole state is filled with Californians, that's why we're moving to NM instead. :hillbilly:

At least most Texas transplants don't have as deep of pockets as Californians did before the housing market collapsed. We blamed them for a lot of the short supply and price inflation we saw around here a few years ago. I'm assuming by your screen name that you're also a gun-toting, gas-hog driving conservative, which is a step in the right direction. There's already way too many liberals here in NM. Just look at the recent elections. Both US Senators, all three Reps and the gov. are liberals. Conservatives lost in every race.

OK, I get it. It's on my list too.

And what's wrong with liberals?

Or, let me phrase the question differently: What's wrong with people who aren't "gun-toting, gas-hog driving conservative(s)"?

Nothing, as long as they aren't two-faced or want to restrict *my* liberties. Unfortunately, those types are not very common.

Depends. Fiscally conservative is good. Socially conservative can go either way.
