I am looking into my options for getting a Saginaw conversion.

Option 1: Do it myself. Ughhh no can do. I'm learning about 40's, but am not even close to "learnt". :frown:

Option 2: Get a shop to do it. Possible, but expensive. If I'm going to spend a lot, I'd rather look into option 3.

Option 3: Find someone who has done it, has some time, and would like to make a couple bucks doing it.

Anyone interested or know of someone that might be?

Timing is very flexible. Not to say I want to be without the baby for too long, just don't care much when the "not too long" is.

I have family in Greenville so, unless I've pissed them off, I can come up pretty much any time.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Steen

Steen Marshall would be the man to talk to on this one, he has done the very conversion you are looking into......... he should be able to give a good idea of what is involved. With all the knowledgeable cruiserheads in this club I don't think you need to consider "shopping" this one out :D

good luck

I'll talk to Marshall.

Not sure taking on something this big as a first project is the smartest move, but maybe it's just fear of the unknown... I do know that one place I talked to said it was an 18hr job for their "experts". Means I should be able to handle it in 18 weeks or so.

Thanks
Steen

I'll help if you get someone to do the welding of the plate to box in the frame.

Always willing to help...and if I can't I can always sit back with a beer and watch :)

"Always willing to help...and if I can't I can always sit back with a beer and watch"

Thanks Dan...

If things go bad, you'll end up watching me sitting back with a

Can that welding be done prior to making the FJ inoperable? Or do I need to get a welder to the house to do that piece?

Kind of feel like I'm being lowered onto the Titanic as the band starts to play.

You can weld the plate without killing it...it goes way out on the frame horn. The only issue I can think of would be the center arm would need to be rigged up somehow until the conversion was done.

Isn't this why you have the 100?

Not worried about having something to drive. Just checking on whether I can get that plate welded before I tear down the steering... sounds like I can.

I'll do a search for more info on this project. Marshall, any advice, pictures, instructions, suggestions on kits etc... would be much appreciated.

Call Kurt with Cruiser outfitters. He sell the main kit. Then you will need the pitman arm. He should have that also. Then ask him what steering box to get and saginaw pump. There are post in the tech section that will tell you this. Then you will need the relay rod. I would suggest you ask kurt which vendor to get it from and what to ask for. I could probably source all the parts for you with a little time. I've got all the tools to do the job. But once it is started it won't run until it's finished.

You cannot add the scabb plates and put the center arm back on safely.

I have no idea what I would charge. But it would be very reasonable.

You can call me tonight. 864-414-0563

Thanks Marshall,

I looked through your forum from last year. Very helpful. You do great work! That is quite a project and without paint by numbers instructions, I would need a LOT of help trying to do this on my own. I'll get there someday, but not sure today is the day.

I will call you tonight.

Steen

Steen, I have also performed this surgery. You rode in the truck at Tellico. I have three sources for the best parts to accomplish. Call me at 864-313-9407 tomorrow or 864-836-6641 tonight. It could be that Marshall & I could do this for you but it would cost you!! The system I use does not need a spud shaft at the Steering Gearbox.

I would be happy to throw in any help needed as well.

Sounds almost like we need a wrenching party :)

Anyone have a shop they can donate to the cause?

Steen is buying the beer!

Alan,
Riding in your truck was an inspiration... That one ride is going to cost me a lot of dollars over the years without a doubt. And every one of them more than worth it! I talked to Marshall last night about a game plan and will call you today. Probably makes sense for you and Marshall to talk as well.

I brew a mean Stout... the only "real" beer:flipoff2:

I'll get a big batch going for those who can stand it, and buy a more watered down version of "beer" for the rest of you.

Do you guys get the look from the significant others when you talk about your trucks... you know the one... "he's cute, but I think he's lost his freak'n mind"?

Thanks all!!! Really looking forward to this.

I don't get those looks anymore :)

Get your parts together and find a place to do it and let's rock!

I don't think I ever got those looks.... By the way Alegar loves that dark beer. He drinks some kind of stuff with oatmeal in it!

Alan, Either your wife is a saint, or you weren't looking in the right direction. I think you mentioned she might be a saint. My wife is too... but I still get the look.

Alex - I will bring some of that "Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout"... best meal in a bottle I've ever had! And I've had it more than once... much more!

Oh I def. get the "look" and I am only dating............ is this a bad sign of things to come :grinpimp:
Not a bad sign... you'll get used to it and learn how to ignore it;)

I ignored it and I am single again (t-minus 2 months and counting) ;)
