Even though I had some success yesterday with the truck, I still need some help. If you watch the video, I hover over the sight glass on the carb for a few seconds. I did this to demonstrate that the fuel level is above half way up the glass. My understanding is that the fuel level should be around half, so my fuel bowl is still too full. I pulled the carb this weekend to double check my float and I made a minor adjustment, which obviously made an improvement, but something is still off. The FSM says my float should be set to 4.1mm. I have this set correctly, and if anything it's on the higher side which would let less fuel in. I'm wondering if this carb has been rebuilt before, because I can recall having to adjust the float quite a bit when I first rebuilt it ( really wish I would have measured it when I took it apart).

My question is: Should I try setting the float to 5.8mm or 8mm like the other carburetors in the F Engine FSM?

My float - Carburetor (FJ, FA) - 4.1mm:

If your gas level is just a little high in the window, then just tweak the float tab a little to drop the fuel level some. Your other adjustment are likely way too much. Make sure the needle valve is good as well as the seat.

I ended up getting the float to 4.8mm and it's much closer to the half way point on the sight glass. I might tweak it just a little more this weekend.

I also noticed that I'm dripping some oil from my oil pan drain plug and from one of the sides. Everything was torqued to spec. I plan on tightening them a 1/4 turn at a time checking in between to see if it stops the drip. If that doesn't work, then I might buy a new pan - feedback on mine was that it was in pretty bad shape anyway.

Up next is the new clutch this weekend and maybe even finish off putting some new gaskets and seals on the transmission and t-case.

The new clutch is in! Well…Mostly…

I can’t for the life of me find the clutch fork release hub. I’ve basically turned over my entire garage but no luck. I can’t imagine I threw it away, but who the heck knows. Anyone have one for a 1F?

check with John @pardion for early 3 finger clutches. He had a bunch in a bucket and forks too.

Man, it’s been a while…

I’m finally getting back to work on the 40 after several months off. I’m working on my clutch and I just pressed the throwout bearing onto the hub and I’m concerned because the bearing is pretty stiff. I can rotate it, but it seems to me like this should move a lot more freely.

Anyone have any idea if the bearing is supposed to spin freely or if there’s supposed to be some resistance?

They'll be stiff when new. They're packed with grease grease.

I agree they do not freely spin… for the first 1,000+ shifts!

Well to me it looks like the alignment/spacing is off. So I would rattail/chainsaw file the hole to fit a good bolt. Could be your Toyota or more likely D trying to be a universal fit or maybe quality control. Have you ask them?

I did send them an email today. I’ll more than likely drill out the hole a little bigger but I’ll see what Dobinson has to say.

I would try and make the hole bigger towards the inside, rather than towards the thinner outside - thus a chainsaw round file will cut quickly and accurately. I guess a drill could work if you can go from the correct side.

Here is my rant about them last summer. Was ranting today about them too on thread today. Not trying to hijack your thread... (you are not alone)

Had issues with Dob Shackles too - right after pin "discussion"

Back to working on my suspension. I got the full suspension kit from Dobinsons minus the shocks. I cannot for the life of me get this to line up on the fixed end of the rear leaf. I’ve even resorted to taking the entire leaf off just to try and refit it, but no luck…

I had to leave the one bolt loose, then align after which I was able to thread in the other bolt. It's tight tolerances.

Knowing what I know now, I don't think I would have used Dobi's hardware again. Their springs ride good but too was unable to torque stuff to 90 lbs without seeing distortion. I also had to have my front shackles warrantied out due to one pin being shorter causing a mis-alignment on installation. I had replaced (1500 mile) OME's with Dobi's. Oh yeah, I too have spring rub on the frame at the military wrap. 😥

The Dobi's do ride nice though with their IMS shocks.

Welcome to the “Oh, Dobinsons is garbage?” Club.
Their warranty is as worthless as their product.

If enough of us talk to them (Florida AND Australia) maybe they’ll listen and not screw over folks in the future. I, and several others got jacked, hopefully people in the future won’t.

👆 what he said.

You going to cut the wraps? I did in Dec 2024 - got a whole lot quieter too - actually it was a different vehicle after they were cut off. I added a leaf to the rear yesterday - I know, good $$ after bad. I am hoping this kicks the can far enough down the road that I can use them for a while and address other issues I think are more pressing.

Have 4plus flipkit - and those Ubolts, you can torque to spec. Dob pins and shackles, total waste.
