Running on fumes...

I filled up yesterday (with top-off) and the needle was centered on the "E" line. I ended up putting 23 gallons in exactly. I seem to remember the service manual listing the capacity in the 25 gal. range. That gas pump looks suspect to me. I'd fuel up elsewhere. I've never got anywhere near that in my tank and at $4.30 a gallon, I wouldn't want to.

23 gallons gets me about 240 miles of city driving now a days (if we want to turn this into another economy discussion).

Don't know what the process is like in your state, but I'd probably re-validate the specific pump against a known container size and if it's still off by that much I'd probably file a complaint. Or even better get one of the local news stations to do an investigative story on it.

I hope you have 35"s, gears, bumpers, etc.....21-22 gallons usually gets me 360-380 miles. But yeah, 22 gallons is the most I've put in my LC.

In an 03+ 100% freeway maybe. Otherwise I'm calling BS.

I'd say 95% freeway...

You're having a hard time believing my 16.3-18 mpg avg on my stock LC but here you're claiming 16.25mpg on a built LC :hhmm:.

16.25 on the last tank which was the first tank after the 90k. Truck is mostly built with 35's, bumpers, etc. Rolls at 6,700 lbs.

His 240 quote was city and your reply was 380. Not apples:apples. I fully expect you do get 18 on the highway but to offer that as a comparison without qualifying the highway percentage is irrelevant.

33's, Winch, Steel front and rear bumpers, some less than aerodynamic lighting, and 125lbs worth of battery. As OregonLC noted, that is purely city driving, which equates to roughly 11mpg. I think I've got 400 out of a tank once with purely highway miles.

It's just depressing knowing that my wife's bimmer gets more than twice that out of a tank half the size, but I guess I didn't buy a cruiser because I was overly concerned with MPG's...

X10

Just drove to Louisville and back with 33's alone and got 16 mpg at 110k in a 2003

I will say I drove mostly 80 mph+

I always pump using the slow fill (first notch) and stop pumping as soon as the pump stops, never topping off

Topping off will not only kill your charcoal canister, but because the pump itself has a vacuum built into the nozzle to reduce vapor lock while pumping, it also sucks up liquid gas as it reaches the nozzle :meh:

If you keep trying to top off your tank, it will actually suck out half the gas you're trying to pump in :o

A buddy of mine didn't believe me, so I proved it to him by pumping 5 gallons into a 5 gallon container using my method and 6.7 gallons worth of gas into another 5 gallon container using his method

Same pump, same station back to back

That's interesting. Would happen to me :-/ I'll try this again. At a different station. But yeah, if its sucking it back into the pump that would make me mad.

One time, I was coming back from work and the light was on...damn thing probably would've started yelling at me at some point if I hadn't pulled over...and I filled it to the top of the hole with 30 gallons for a nice $113.70. I wish I still had that picture of the receipt.

Next time I fill up I will post a photo of the pump/receipt. Think my stock tank is closer to 38/40 gallons or there abouts.

That should make your eyes water when you fill up. Lucky for me it's a turbo diesel so getting 650miles + from a tank should not be that hard even with all the extra wight I lug around.

The most gas I have ever seen go into my tank was 24 gallons. That was after 70 miles on the light. I can't possibly imagine 27 gallons. The truck probably dumped fuel out the filler neck due to over filled. Mine has done that. I have also blown gas all over myself when the auto-shutoff didn't work. That resulted in a little more fuel.

I hate when that happens. After dousing myself and my truck in fuel twice, I just set the auto-fill to the first "lowest volume" click or wedge my wallet in there. Less drama that way. For some reason though, the gas pump nozzle gets stuck in my filler tube...I have to wiggle and wrench it out to get it free sometimes.

So here's a couple questions......is it better, best or worst Ira ever to fill up while the truck is running? Also, I've heard that filling up while the tanker is filling up the gas station is bad too. Myth?

Filling with your engine running can lead to an EVAP MIL :o

And of course, there's that chance of sparking a fire, but even I think the chances of that due to an engine running is slim and none :meh:

That being said, I've been to stations where they will issue a citation for pumping while idling

As for the fuel tanker, it stirs up sediment that collects on the bottom of the tanks as it pumps in fresh fuel.

It's not nearly as bad as it used to be with older style steel tanks, but it's definitely not a myth.

I personally avoid any station with a tanker :o

I know she could've taken more. I looked down the hole! LOL Stupid thing stopped at $100.00!

Glad other peeps are getting that much fuel into their trucks. I thought it was just me.
