Some info I picked up from the TLCA forum. Doesn't really help for planning:

Not crazy per se. Generally, it has been Father's Day weekend. Last year's record snow fall caused the date to move into July. This year the Rubicon Springs owners haven't opened the reservation books.

Based on what has happened over the last 10 years or so, I'd say have flexibility to move your plans out to as late as August. It shouldn't be earlier than Father's Day, but it certainly could slip, just depends on the weather. .[/QUOTE

Hmm what's the about 6 cruisers? Im not bringing mine. Im just good for finacial support who ever I ride with.

Are we looking into semi truck to move trucks to cali?

Who is going to tow? I know mike is towing.

I'll be looking to transport and fly. Just too much time off required to make the tow IMO.

update....

hey guys I know a few of us are interested in making this trip. I've been talking to georg (orangefj45 ) and a few other cali guys about this trip.

I'm going to look into shipping the cruisers out on a group deal. Bryan did you say that you had a freind who hauled vehicles?

How many guys are going to haul their trucks on thier own?

Who wants to ship em?

just trying to do some planning....

I'm up for shipping. Already talked to momma about flying out with me.

Screw shipping. Let me borrow someone's tow rig and Ill drive 3 or 4 rigs out there at once.

I have thought about this quite a bit and here's what I came up with...

would require a trailer$$$, major tags upgrade$, 5th wheel hitch$$, over $1500 in Diesel (at today's prices), an oil change, and a lot of burned vacation time. I think I'd come out cheaper, and if I am going to do a cross country trip, I would want to take my time and do it right. That's my .02, but maybe I'm not looking at this from the same angle?

my .02

Morning,

I think shipping the trucks would be the best bet. Especially if we can get a deal on multiple trucks.
The drive to cali isn't too bad but who wants to rush out there, wheel (maybe break something) then have to rush back! To enjoy your self you would need like 2 weeks of vacation(in my oppion to do that) Maybe some of you have vacation like me that are endless. (love the govt vacation plan) :D

You can fly out of rdu to smf or reno/tahoe round trip for about $500. I dont think that is too bad.

I've been looking into shipping (trucking) companies and will hopefully have some answers in the next few weeks.

There is also VA club that is thinking about going in 2013. I've been talking to one of there members. Maybe for those who want to drive out there vehicles they can convoy with those guys.

I'll share what information I received when I did the research for 4-5 rigs from NC to CA for the event.

Cost issues are relative to how many stops/pick-ups/loading and if they can fill their trailer with other vehicles. The most reasonable way is to have a single pick-up and drop-off point with a full trailer. With the variety in size of the vehicles going, the trailer can be an issue with some shippers.

Then we go to closed or open transport. For some of us, this may be an issue since the vehicle will also be filled with camping gear/support/tools/etc and be un-lockable, making for unsecure storage for critical gear that the shipper, even if they offer insurance, won't be able to replace in time for the event.

Then, how long the period is for return and if the same driver will stay to do the return trip. If they can pick up another run in CA while waiting, cheaper. If they are sitting stagnant, expensive. This goes with if its an independent trucker or a trucking company. Most all I've dealt with are independents who go through a broker to find work.

This goes with our flexibility on pick-up and drop-off on both ends. The rigs may need to sit for weeks at both ends, this is the security part I referred to in my previous post. I know I'd be uncomfortable having my open 40, sitting full of camping gear, spare parts, tools and coolers for a few days/week or more in an unsecure place. Hell, I'd be uncomfortable having my locked 80 sitting with all the necessary stuff inside. The location has to be big enough for the rig to park and load all the vehicles, with someone holding the keys for them all, being "on-call", which could have relatively short notice for the pick-up/drop-off time.

This can be cured by using UPS to ship all this stuff, needing an address to send it all to as well.

Lastly, fuel costs are so volatile that few would give a "hard quote" until right before the expected ship/pick-up date.

I appreciate all the work Adam is investing in this, please don't take this post as being negative. I/we went through this in '08 and these were the obstacles that came up during that time.

I'd say the one thing those looking ahead and planning to attend this AMAZING event is that the process will be "fluid" and we must be flexible. So many things can change between now and June 2013 that everything from vacation time to diesel fuel prices to the event date can make an impact on all the well laid plans...

I am interested but what Jerry has stated is exactly why I have not chimed in. I have no clue where my finances for a trip such as this will be in June 2013. I also have no clue how busy I will be at that point in time.\

The economy is a big player in this for me. Right now my business is holding it's own but not moving forward at near the rate I would hope for in a better economic time. The time factor is also a player for me. I am leary about shipping a rig across country by a 3rd party. I think my interest would be towing myself.

I'll keep an eye on what is going on, but will not toss my hat in the ring until at least a year from now if not a little longer.

Jerry thank you for info. Definetly some good advice and info!

I think at the meet and greet I will try to arrange a meeting for those that are interested in going to meet and discuss ideas.

When I win the lottery this will not be a issue! haha

Anyone made any contact with a delivery by rail option? Just curious and throwing out another option that might be worth an inquiry.

When I moved to California in 2000 it was $500 to ship by rail from Greensboro to San fran, Sacramento or Eugene, OR (the closest to my destination). I still have my travel log to compare cost but I got out there for less than that (sub $2/gal) in transportation cost. I did incure 4 nights in a hotel, but that is likely comprable to the airfair I would have spent to get there as well. Coming home was a different story..... only one stop at the red garter motel :D, waiting on Nissan of reno to open so I could fix the shotty PM I paid for before I left. You can get home in 64 hrs but your car will not appreciate it and fatigue becomes a big factor.

I bring it up because as I waited for a train to pass yesterday I saw new cars being delivered double stacked in a car. Granted with the size of our rigs, the double stack may not be an option, but how wide is a rail car? I wonder if we could get them sideways door to door to get the count up. (yes bo/luke duke skills may be required as well as sunroof access, sorry Adam :D)

You guys just need to find a good ol' boy with a low boy that wants to do a little western wheelin. May be cheaper than someone looking to make money hauling a bunch of trucks out there and a club member can ride with him. I'm still hauling my own to keep my end nice and simple.

I've talked with a friend of mine at work, who has a family member that transports vehicles (CDL with a 7 vehicle trailer). I'm going to start the discussion of how much it would cost, and if he'd like to ride with us.

I wouldn't mind a cross country drive and see the scenery, but time, breakage, cost will all play a factor...

Just reminding us that Brian has a line on a possible solution to the issue...

Just for kicks, I called All Pro Auto, "Americas #1 auto transporter", so they say. To haul 10 LC's from Raleigh to Sacramento, one way is $11840. This was based on a carrier that can fit 10 1988 FJ60's. I think Brian's method needs to be looked into, friend with a CDL and carrier! Would love to go with you guys but wedding, work, and life is in the way. Proud of all you guys for having a dream and following through with it. Good luck and take lots of pics!

OUCH!

thanks for looking that up kenny. Im going to call a few others just to see what they say.

If Brian has a contact with a trucker what would be great. I have a freind who has a trucking company, but he doesnt have a car hauler. im going to ask anyway.

Yeah, the only feasible way would be to have someone go, and stay with us, and bring them all back.

From a business standpoint it doesn't make sense, as that carrier and employee is idle for a week and not making them more money. So, it would be better for someone willing to make some extra cash on the side, or someone that owns their own equipment.

The only issue is then the camping gear and extra equipment. If we have someone willing to drive, would it be feasible to rent a moving van? May not save much money if you're talking both...

research....

I've called several transporters.... prices range $1000-$1400 each way per vehicle. The more vehicles we have the better the discount.

Due to the size of the cruisers they may need to be put on flatbeds or lowboys. Due to tire width and height. They can put 3 cruisers (maybe 4) on a truck.

I have a freind who owns a trucking company and Im waiting to hear back from him to see if he has flatbeds and or car trailer access.

I have not been heard from train guys yet.

I know Mike is driving and trailering his 60. Does anybody have a 1ton or bigger towing truck?

Anybody else interested in towing?
