If you really wanted to you could easily get dropped at the Tahoma staging area and hike down Cadillac hill to the springs for the Sat night dinner and raffle + bonfire, bag it and thumb a ride up to the top on Sunday. It only takes a couple hrs to hike in.

Never received a reply from the PM...sending in registration this week!!! Any unexpected damage will be taken up with Tony at camp since he is the one that said "you are Rubicon ready!"
In reality I know how far to trust Tony's "you can make it no problem"
OK, I am back... and that is just too dang funny! Yes, many folks have learned not to trust my 'no problem, you can make it' comments.

Okay, so I have been to GSMTR about 10 times and I can't make it this year due to wife's grad school graduation. I went to Moab in 99 and that was a blast, but I haven't made the Rubicon yet. Hmmm.....I'll have kids in a year, and who knows about a job with vacation next year, so I think this trip needs to happen for me this year.
So....how crazy am I to have my 40 shipped out to Reno, then drive it home after Rubicon? BTW, I live in NC, so that's a 4 day drive. Mind you, this is no ordinary 40, it has a 5spd, turbo diesel, a/c, and pwr steering, but that's still a very long ride.
I don't think I can afford to ship both ways unless somebody buys one of my toyota diesels up for sale, but that would make it much easier. If I was in a gasser, the mileage expense to shipping would be a wash, but not in the diesel....that's just a LOT of days behind the wheel. Am I nuts or just growing some?

There is always concern when wheeling (hard) and then having to drive it home. Can you borrow or bum a tow rig/trailer? Perhaps find a buddy with one who wants to attend and help share cost?
Ya, this is a pretty aggressive plan. However, I do have another registration from NC.
That's a good point. I will be more tired driving back than driving out, so it's less risky to ship home.
And if for some reason I lose a motor mount or something, it wouldn't need to be 2600 mile worthy repair. Still, shipping both ways, though more expensive, probably makes more sense. Towing is not really an option because I'll spend more money in fuel doing that than it costs to ship.

There is no "base camp", Rubithon is truly a "Point A - Point B" type of event. It's unique to most any other TLCA event in that regard. You would really have to hustle to get down to the Springs on Saturday. You would want to be there before 5 PM. It could be driven/hiked, but you wouldn't drive a rental there.
You could also drive to the staging area in Tahoma, and see 90% of the rigs coming off the trail on Sunday.
Ideally, to see the trail and experience the event, you need to plan 3 - 4 days.
That other NC registration would probably be mine. We have talked about towing but I'm staying on the West Coast for a couple weeks then hitting Moab and the FJCSummit in Ouray on the way home...

Toy350, alot of us on Big Jim's run will be camping out at the loon lake campground. It is a nice camp area and is lakeside so the kids can have some fun and get wet if it is hot. We usually roll in at all times on wed and have a nice campfire and dinner and get all excited bout the next morning take off. Looking forward to meeting you.
Sounds fun John, but I'm not sure on how quick I can break camp in the morning with my crew, we've all been camping but not with an early morning deadline. May be a weak excuse but it's a truthful one! I will be looking at the details more closely and seeing what's feasible. Thanks for the info and looking forward to meeting you as well.

Toy350, given that IMO you better get a room or 2 at Icehouse or Robbs and that way you can rise, eat, and hit the trail. There will be plenty of time at staging area to repack, get cameras, change clothes,go potti, shift gear etc.......
Phil, I would bet that Gunner, Big Jim Adams will be there ahead of me and usually you can find the Knorr brothers, Manny, KT40, Steiner, Dremmans and a few others there. As you approach the Loon dam you will get to the end of pavement and it starts gravel, right there stop, look to your right, take the paved road past the bathrooms and it winds downhill with campsites every which way. It is first come first serve but there is plenty of room usually. Lookin like Wed. night is gonna be fun. Be there if you can it may be the last evening fire for a few nights.......
