There's bound to be a few in the VI Cruisers section... That was CrustyBJ60's rig. It was a nice nononsense wheeler. The thing was a write off when he got it and he turned it into a sweet rig.
However, he sold it to a guy on the island here who is using it as a hunting/fishing truck.

Great write up Stump. great truck as well. x2 with Jeremy, would love to see the 80 in 10 years.

Thanks BK! After seeing you and Kirk negotiate the rocks, I knew I'd have to do it. I really wanted to get down there for Rubithon this year, but it was not to be. I think it may have been a let down considering how much fun we had last September.

Tobash, Glad you got the reference... It is my Battle Cry. One of my buddies named it the Tick because it is "Nigh-Invulnerable!" (and blue like the Tick). We watched that cartoon religiously through college. I have a Tick action figure, I just haven't figured out where to put him in the truck.

As far as the SOA, it isn't perfect. The rear pinion is pointed up a bit to high so I get a vibration from 20-25 KPH. and the Marlin knuckle gussets don't work on the driver's side with stock steering. I'll get a pick and show you what I mean.

Best place for a Tick action figure is somewhere rediculous, like in an action pose holding onto the passenger's side of the rear mirror. Either that or holding up a cup of coffee like Atlas holding up the World.

I would shim the beast as a temporary measure. Then you can cut and weld at your leisure without damaging things in the mean time. Vibrations mean stress and wear.

Don't forget to get an Arthur Doll. Also, he has a temporary side-kick made of a piece of 1 by six with hinges that hold on arms and legs that were made of 1 by ones. The face was drawn on with crayon. You can make that. Personally, I am considering dressing up my wife as "the American Maid". High heels and cleans the house. Mmmmmm

I am moving to Saskatchewan in 4 weeks. It is maybe a 14-18 hour drive out to you. Maybe we might hook up so I can see the SOA before I attempt it.

Best,

T

Great story glad to see on V.I.

Would post pics but dont know how

Stumpalama, great looking rig and where I got some of my inspiration for my SOA!

I was looking around for trac bar idea's this morning and ran across a thread where you asked for pics of some and wound up with a link to Pirate. Just wondering what you wond up doing for a trac bar? Any pics would be great!

Wow, just wow! Your build is pretty much exactly what I want to do. I mean almost exactly, at least according to my research so far. Mine is a '73. Build plan: SOA, FJ60 front knuckles with disc and 4x4 labs or Marlin hi steer, 35's, Cnt the front, reperch the rear, Longfields, 5.3 or 5.7 Vortec, NV4500, Orion 4:1, 4:56 gears, ARB front and rear. Some gear calculators said those ratios, and with the NV4500's .73 5th, should yield about 73mph @ 2200rpm. And yet still some good crawl ratios.

I copy what you said about the rear spring perches being down about 1.5-2˚, to avoid the vibe.

I welded years ago, wanna get a MIG and go at it. Any suggestions on which welder? Have of course looked at Lincoln, Miller and even the Eastwood. Thinking around a 180 amp unit or so.

I've got a FF rear, but need FJ60 knuckles, basically everything outboard, the hubs rotors etc. I think I can use my same locking hubs?

If ya know of any FJ60 knuckles out there lemme know:bounce:

Again, awesome post you did, thanks!

Thanks for the props. As far as welding goes, I am definitely an amateur, albeit an enthusiastic amateur. I started with a POS Century flux core welder, then moved up to a Lincoln SP135T, which was great. I now have a Hobart Handler 210 and it is awesome. It can be used with 110 or 220 volts. It is very versatile and easy to use. 180A would be plenty for all the work you would be doing on a Cruiser.

Very impressive machine! I remain "aspirational" at this point awaiting delivery of my vehicle from AZ. Looks like years of fun ahead for me and my son to build one borrowing some lessons from yours! THANK YOU!
