One cheap way to store small tools and straps out of sight is to pull the tailgate carpet and cut some of the inside tailgate, and just put the carpet back on. Or, if you want to get fancy, you could do something like this:

Next time you're in the area let me know, I'll go wheeling with y'all.

Will do sir!

May as well just buy from KR at Wagon Gear. Get the whole tailgate :D I'm sort of considering it.

Did you get yours installed yet Patrick?

Nope Kevin's still has them. I sent them in at the end of December and hes had so many orders, he hasnt been able to get started the repairs just yet... Speaks for the awesome quality of his products! So on second thought, Alex, wait until mine are back until you order yours hahaha.

Well you fellas are spending my money for me! :D

Do you think gallon bottles of oil and water in the tailgate would be a bad idea? I'd store them upright when the tailgate is closed.

How does one fasten the drawers to the vehicle? 4 anchors at the corner through the floor?

I like getting ideas. I wish I could go crazy and do all this stuff.

On another note I think I blew the relay on my Hellas. Not really sure how. The lights don't light up. Checked wiring connections with test light. At the relay the black wire coming out does not illuminate the test light when the switch is on. The black wire runs to the lights and supplies power when the switch is turned on.

Make sense to y'all? Am I correct that the relay is bad?

I swung by O'Reilly's after work with my Hella relay in hand and found another relay on the shelf. Matches visually. Works.

What's weird is the Hella website says the spare is a 15amp relay. On my relay it has a small "30" printed on the bottom. The one I found is a "4 Pin 30amp 12V Relay"

The relay was obviously the faulty part, so I'm glad my lights work again. Just seems kinda odd that Hella lists the part differently.

A, I kept a few quart of oil, coolant (smaller container), brake fluid, spare set of belts etc... in mine. I put my fluids in vacuum bags. Never had a problem. (quart size bottles were the best arrangement for me with KR's tailgate and my quantities.)

My storage box fit snug between wheel tubs and back seat and tailgate. I never had mine move around at all with the weight I carried. Our 60s didn't come with cargo tie downs as you know so, yes you would have to drill through the cargo floor to secure the box with eyelets, tie downs etc if you choose to.

You know what I might try in the interim?

Just taking some 2x8's and notching them together to make dividers essentially.

One behind the wheel arches the width of the vehicle. Two running the length of the cargo space just inside the wheel arches, and the fourth across the width near the tailgate making a square in the back corners, and a narrow section between them.

Forgive the awesome sketch. I needed some visualization here lol

So many ways to do this depending on your skill, tools and budget. Here are a couple pics from Marley to wet your appetite.

So I noticed my gas gauge was MUCH lower than normal after driving 100 miles. I checked the oil. My girlfriend said it smelled like gas. Makes sense to me that the fuel pump is leaking into the crankcase.

I just pulled the pump off and it was full of gas (normal) but what poured out from the bottom, underneath the arm, was odd. I don't have the best sense of smell, but it was darker than my oil, and there was quite a bit of it. I'm attaching some photos. Just hoping this is a bad pump. Going to get a free replacement in a few minutes.

I'll have to attach another pic of what came out in the next post.

Need some help guys

I'm getting the symptom of gas smell in the oil, and poor mileage. That is why I replaced the other pump. Now I have it again.

What else could make the oil smell like gas if we rule out the mechanical fuel pump?

Valve adjustment, compression, the oil weight? (Running Delo 400LE 15W-40) Engine timing? Messed up carb?

Sounds like overfueling to me. Choke is sticking open/not closing completely or your running rich would be my guess. Or a combination of both.

J

I have the choke disabled on this Weber. FPR could have failed. It's just a cheapie parts store thing. I haven't messed with any of the tuning screws lately. I'll do a valve adjustment. Check timing and then tune the carb today.

Well I had an interesting day of working on the Cruiser.

Got the consensus that my oil did not smell like gas from three club members.

Started on the valve adjustment and found this:

New vs Old ^^^

Valves also needed adjustment. A couple were loose by .002

Then I checked the timing. Also off... :bang:

Sometimes you gotta just...

And then...

Didn't get a chance (didn't feel like) tuning the carb, it ran well. So I left it alone. Hopefully the MPG's come back up.

Just read through your whole write up, nice build mate and informative too.

I know you've had the big sticker on your window for a while, ih8mud.com, would you know if it's still available, I have the small stickers and I'd like to get hold of a couple of the bigger ones:D
