The Poly axles that you all are breaking, are they semi or full floaters?

they are semi floaters
And just what does Mr Long do to his axles that makes them so tough?
who knows it is classified.

them 3 " wheel spacers are bending those shafts. you prolly run 2 " bs rims ontop of those spacers huh ?

Aaaaaaa nope - gonna disagree with you on this one. Am running 2" spacers with WE beadlocks that have something like 4.5" of backspacing - that puts me at about 2" or 2.5" backspacing (which is what, about an 1" past normal?). I ran Stazwork double beadlocks at 2" BS with 38.5" TSL/SX's siped and air downed all the time with no real issues. Went to the WE's when I wanted to go 39" after reading all the junk on Pirate about improving steering while aired down.

I think the Poly's must max out at 37"s - which to me isn't all that impressive compared to stock - but then again, I am really not a big wheeler - only getting out for about two runs to Tellico and 3 or 4 runs with NF Cruiserheads annually. Really rely on folks like ya'all who live out West and live/breath wheeling all the time!

Just strange as I know of several folks running centered mini axles that are taking a bigger beating that I'm dishing out - especially considering my nursing it a bit more lately.

Not jealous - as my friends put it, life isn't so bad down here :D.

Damn Bill, you Florida guys are rough on rear axle shafts! How many have you and Jim combined to break now?

Get that thing back together so you can ride with us next week at the GSMTR. We'll be there from Wednesday through Sunday at the Tellico Cabins right on Trail 1. Should be 5 or 6 rigs there with us.

Pussy...
Nursing sucks.. build your rig to withstand...
;)

Hahaha! You're absolutely right... I need to do a bunch of research and ask lots of stupid questions before I settle on an answer, but I liked your prior 35 spline suggestion.

The rear is back together - pulled apart a spare rear axle to harvest the axles for spares, bringing the spare no-slip and another 4.56 chunk (as well as some spare mini-shaft parts). Heck gonna bring a spare spring too!

Bit more stuff to finish - but plan to load on the trailer this Friday and head for the UC meeting on Saturday and some chilling in the Upstate, then over to State Line Sunday night. Definitely plan on catching up to you to see your new mods - if possible, let me know if Steve (Eric's old chopped FJ60) and I can join ya'all for a run or two.

are you running red label crawlers? i'm thinking that toyota rear axles just aren't strong enough to survive sticky tires.....one of my buds fragged his rear dana 60 ring gear after he swapped to crawlers....

i wonder if Mr. Longfield would heat treat & cryo stock rear axle shafts if you sent them to him? (he treats r&p now if you send yours to him).....i bet they would be stronger than poly's shafts...

I almost wonder if you are better putting stock shafts back in.

You ain't outta luck as *some 60 series used factory offset D60's in Venezuela ;p Not sure if those were the 30 spliners or if it had the spindles large enough to house 1.5" dia. shafts....

30 splines as same as Yota stuff .. but I never thought in a D60 ( even offset coz are SF ) for my Tencha .. my option should be a FF Yota rear or if I gotta go to 42" - 44" 14B FF Corporate ..

Lots off cut ..

Bill if you need more spares I have 2 spare sets of rears and 2 spare sets of fine spline front mini truck birfs and shafts . Drop me a pm on nf .

axle strength

I have stock 33 spline G,Q axle's under my 45 runing 37'' tyre's with v8 and have bounced the crap out of it on a fair few occasion's and have not yet broken one, i have spare's to put in but i'm looking at getting chromo axle's/c,v from Cal offroad there the stongest i've heard of so far.

Do you have any proof, or is just anecdotal?

Excuse my ignorance - but what axles do you have? I'm not up on the "G, Q" acronym? I did fine on 37"s and pretty decent with 38.5's - it's the 39's that are killing the axles (mind you the other tires wern't killing stock axles - only 1 in 7 years of hard wheeling with 35 Boggers, 37 MTRs or 38.5 TSL/SX's).

The Poly's just aren't taking the leverage/torque on the designed principal of twist - they're a twisting and bending - and then staying bent apparently.

This has been a great topic - albeit a unneeded distraction while I'm trying to get my 40 back together by Thurs. Al Posted this on NFC - damn sik: http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/14b_bible/index.html

Here's a stock to Poly comparison - stock will snap off at the splines 99% of the time, the Poly's are twisting at the splines (big improvement - maybe), and then are bending - once bent you can imagine what it's doing. The first grenaded and had all sorts of hairline cracks (which is why we thought it was flawed from the get go). I've no explanation on this one yet?

GQ is a model of Nissan Patrol, made between, I think, 1988 and 1998.

G,Q

Yeah as said G,Q is a type of nissan, there a 33 spline on the rear and 31 spline on the front, if you look at the website cal offroad - nissan axle's and c,v's there is a bit of info, their claiming to have built tried and tested the world's toughest chromo axle's and c,v's.

I can't remember what their breaking strength was but it was a huge figure.
