I've had cruisers for a long time (30+ years) and I have never been left stranded. However, I'm thinking about getting some roadside assistance insurance just in case I even do need a tow.

The one that my insurance company offers (Geico) is worthless. AAA seems good in that depending on the plans, they will tow you up to 100 or 200 miles.

My question is what other options are available? Needs to tow a reasonable distance and not only to a "repair facility" but home. TIA.

I have the AAA Premier. One 200 mile tow and three 100 mile tows per year.

It has more than paid for itself in transporting non-running vehicles during moves or bringing CL purchased parts vehicles home. No questions, a rollback shows up, and they take it where you want. I've had it for 20+ years and am very satisfied with it.

Oh, and the roadside assistance part works too... :)

Yep I have had AAA premium for close to 10 years. I have only used it to tow my trucks to the shop for preventative maintenance 3 times in the 10 years. Once to get the head gasket done, once for the turbo and once for paint.

Cha ching for aaa on your account.

There’s a bedding in process for the long tow at aaa. Ie you can’t sign up now and get a long tow. If you tow at all <x days upon subscribing then you can’t be eligible for the long tow at least in ca. Don’t ask me how I know.

These are the important details some people miss. In the moment of truth aka emergency coverage is king. There’s good reason why aaa been around for so long.

AAA is what we use as well. It's come in handy a handful of times over the years, specifically when the radiator in our old Volvo blew.

AAA Premier here as well. The off-road parks are withing the 100 mile radius, so worth it if something breaks while wheeling. Already used it for a friend when he swamped and locked up his tx case in his new Taco. Saved him a hefty tow bill.

AAA Plus here, three 100 tows a year. You only have to be on one end of the tow. So, for instance, your buddy is stuck 75 miles away. AAA will show up to him with a flat bed and tow his vehicle to your house on your AAA.
It's basically tow insurance. I've used it once in the last few years. No, twice. It's worth it to me. My wife's van has 190K miles, my 80 has 240K miles. At that point I think I want tow insurance.
You can find comparison charts online for other similar services, just Google it. I'd say just pick the price and features you want.

This is interesting, and not something that is spelled out, or at least I didnt find it spelled out. I was just looking at AAA a couple days ago as I'm planning a cross country with my 80. Just so I'm understanding, the tow insurance will cover X amount of tows at various mileages depending on plan level regardless of who owns the vehicle? My single sister has a high mileage vehicle and sounds like a no brainer if they'll tow any vehicle within the plan limits as long as the plan owner is on one end of the tow. I'm sold.

Edit: For some reason my post is showing as part of your quote....

wow I feel like I have been living under a rock.
AAA Premier is $126/ year for one person than additional $65 per household.
For a person who has multiple Trucks that are 20+ years old AAA seems like a no brainer...

Looks like AAA is the only choice?

There are other options but compared to AAA they are either really expensive or the service offered isn't very useful, ie: only a 20 mile tow.

Rubicon trail is almost exactly 200 miles from my front door. I drive there and back but if something breaks bad, AAA.
