Hi,

I have a clunking noise which only happens when I am in low range or high range with the center diff locked. The center diff lock automatically engage when I go into low range, if i am in high range and press the centre diff lock button on my dash the noise also occurs.

Providing the centre diff lock is not engaged, no noise occurs.

I was originally advised it could be my front diff making the noise, so i replaced my front diff with another working diff centre, issue remained.

The noise only happens when turning hard left or right, it does not happen when driving straight.

i than had my front end rebuilt which included
COMPLETE FRONT DIFF HOUSING REBUILD
SUPPLY NEW CV'S AND AXLES
SUPPLY ALL NEW SEALS
SUPPLY NEW KING PIN BEARINGS
SUPPLY NEW WHEEL BEARINGS
SUPPLY NEW DRIVE FLANGE STUD KITS
SUPPLY NEW KING PIN STUD KITS
SUPPLY NEW DIFF FILLER PLUG KIT
SUPPLY NEW FRONT ROTORS
SUPPLY NEW FRONT PADS

And unfortunately, the noise is still here.

I'm now being told, my transfer case is the issue and needs to be replaced or re-built.

If this is the case so be it, i will need to get it done. But I just want to know if anyone else has had this issue before, or has any ideas what else it could be or agree that it is the transfer case?

Videos of the noise can be found at

All replies are appreciated

Thanks

No noise with the center diff locked, but noise with unlocked. Please drop the front DS and do the same test by engaging the CDL, then report back. We need to isolate the front end from the Transfer case.

Oh, and don't pay too much attention what a mechanic is telling you. The parts in an 80 are repairable, no need to actually replace your tcase!

The transfer case in these are dam near bulletproof !
Have the Control arm bushings been replaced ?
What @alia176 said is a good place to start.
And will help isolate the noise.

Hi,

What is the DS, sorry I am not mechanically minded.

So if I press the CDL button when in high range, the noise will occur when turning full left or right.
The CDL light appears automatically when I am in low range, the noise occurs when turning full left or right.

If the CDL light is not in the dash, the noise does not occur.

let me know if this is the info needed, or you need me to try something else.
thank you

Hi,
The control arm bushings have not been replaced.
If it was the control arm bushings, why would it happen only when the CDL is engaged? Wouldn't it happen at all times?

Most of the power go's to the back when the CDL is not engaged. when the CDL is engaged there's positive and equal power the front diff.
And if your doing this on the pavement then there's binding happening, this binding will cause the front housing to try to rotate and make the clunking noise you describe 😜 The noise will still happen in the dirt just not as pronounced.

The drive shaft runs from the transfer case to the front diff

IME Aussies refer to vehicle Driveshafts (American speak) as Propeller shafts (Toyota speak)
