Use pantyhose as a make-shift belt if you are just doing a quick fix.

He is 100 miles out from town. i may pick up a belt instead of the 100 mile patyhouse. i will pack some leggins in my glove box now though. Thanks for all in the input. What did we do in the 80's....... No power steering ..........no Ih8mud.......... No big tires.......... no crazy mods....... I will never feel alone again!
Thanks to you all!

Good luck, and take lots of warm clothes.

Okay... I am out the door...
New belts of all sizes
300 pounds of tools
Water pump
gaskets
coolant/water
lots of coffee
warm clothes
attitude adjusters
Ih8mud confidence
Will report back in a few hours...........................hopefully!

so howd it go?

On

IIRC, Nuclearlemon drove for months in this configuration. It's a good upper body workout, steering a wagon without any power assist.:)[/QUOTE]

Was that on the sixty I now own? (Ingrid)

Smog Pump is my issue and it goes the way of the dinosaur as soon as my idler gets here.

Power Steering leak = smog pump seizure = idler and new PS pump

Well we got in at 1 am after dealing with cold weather and no light........D'oh ....forgot the flash light and headlamp.
It was indeed the smog pump!!!!!!!! The power steering had a leak and failed the pump....
Let this be a lesson on fixing these leaks in the power steering as it has failed the smog pump!

Just for shi#'s and giggles we put a panty hose belt on just to see if it would work. Tied tight with a truckers hitch, it worked!!!! dont know how long it would last but it did indeed work. So..... keep a pair of leggins in your glove box for the "JUST IN CASE" factor. Now I need to find him a smog pump?

Should I go with a $90 checker special or spend the extra dough on a better one from??????? where?
Thanks again everyone!
Tom

Yes! Woohoo! Can I say I called it? :D

I did the pantyhose trick on my 22R 4WD, I TOTALLY thought my uncle was messing with me and just trying to help me get lucky with my then GF (now wife :D ). It was for my alternator. It worked enough to get me home.

For smog pumps, EVERYONE has told me don't get a rebuilt one because they suck. Either go new ($$$$$$$) or a low mileage used. I think Toyota sells a rebuild kit.

Glad to hear yah got back!

86 that smogpump and install an idler pulley & while your in there, fix the PS...might as well bust all your knuckles in one session so they all heal at the same time too.

I'll be doing the exact same thing once parts arrive

quick question?????????????Does putting and idler pulley, capping and plugging have any profound effect on emissions, as this rig has inspection coming up.
After reading some threads i know Trapper50cal has done this.......? still out there?

It can have a negative effect on tailpipe emissions. American emissions testing is done on a percentage basis. Real world emissions are measured on a pollution per mile basis. The obvious way around the American standards is to blow more clean air into the exhaust, thereby diluting the pollution as measured at the tailpipe.

Honered to get some feedback from you fj40jim.
Is there a way to do this....(forcing air into the exhaust)
Can this be done?
I did this on my 40 in Alaska, but we dont have inspection or emission testing there. I used brass plumbing stops for the plugs. they looked really pretty in there when polished.
i just want it to pass if i rip all this stuff out.

Sweating the decision!?

I wasn't very clear. The more accurate name for the Air Pump would be "exhaust pollution dilution pump".
Pumping air into the exhaust system fools the sniffer by reducing the percentage of HC,CO and CO2.

If the AP is removed, then the percentage of pollution at the tailpipe increases. The actual amount of pollution stays the same, but without the dilution of the air injection, it can look worse.

The solution to pollution is NOT dilution. But, that's how the domestic carmakers wanted it tested, so...

Removing the AP is pretty much guaranteed to fail any underhood inspection, and may fail a tailpipe sniff, depending on how tight the testing standards are.

Thanks Jim
I figured this out when reading my own reply. I do like your nickname for the SP though.

I ended up gutting the smog pump. I found that one of the blades had expoled in there and got lodged in there seizing the SP. I am just gonna run it gutted as an idler pulley empty until i can rebuild or replace with a $90 checker special.

Smog Pump

If you need it then used or new's up to you and your wallet. I'd just gut the old one maybe new bearings and re install. But we don't have to pass Smog cop here. :D

Or try explaining it to her in subtle tone of McGiver wisdom! Or just let her wonder............
I will say this though..........IT WORKS!
