between new mtr model and creepys .. which it's better for your wheeling .?

defiantely the Creepies.....they are pretty scary on ice though which shouldn't matter to you. And FYI, I drove on both I blew off the bead hard before I fixed them. The tires show no damage at all. The Creepies are a tough tire no doubt.

After much thought I have decided to buy these to solve my wheel dramas....

Mickey Thompson Part 1268412 - Classic II Black Alloy Wheel by Mickey Thompson

I will then keep the Creepies and mount them on the new rims. I would really like to use the MTRs, since they are new and not a bad tire. Thing is it will cost me more to buy a new MTR and then 4 new 15" rims and then I am suck with 15" rims. I could buy cheapo 15" rims but this will only keep me happy for so long.

So best bang for my buck is the M/T wheels linked above. I went to my local tire shop today, same place I spend over $5k a year at on fuel. They were kind of asses so screw it I am doing this on my own. They couldn't even fix my leaky tire until tomorrow and only if I leave the truck there. So I will fix that myself too, all I have to do is clean the bead and re-seat it. That is the whole point of this truck anyways, do every single thing I can myself...

So I am buying this too.

Ideal Tire Grooving Iron W/#4 Head and Blades Siper | eBay

I am going to sipe the tires myself. Even if it only cost me $40 to do 4 tires at the local shop (highly unlikely in my town) it is still $40 kind of wasted. By purchasing the tire siper/groover I then have it for tires in the future. I have a set of 40" Creepies too so if I like the siped Creepeis (35s) I can then sipe my 40s if I want. I always feel a money spent on tools is money well spent!

My compressor I bought a few years back before my 1st trip to Panama is also pretty beat. It is a Viair that is portable. Wires have frayed where they exit the housing and contact, causing a short. The hose it came with it also pretty much dust, it is that cheap plastic made in China hose, mine is kinked and such and basicaly just sucks.

So I am also planning to hard mount this compressor if I can and wire it up to a switch on the dash.

Great day of wheeling here in Wyoming, again!! :D

I took more video than pictures. Once I have that ready I will post it up! :D

Only carnage of the day was a broken ARB line on my buddy's rear axle. He had it fixed in about 10mins. The Cruiser performed flawless all day!

Looks like an awesome day. Wish I could have joined! Can't tell if you have the new wheels on with all the snow packed in. Our drive from Jackson to Denver took 12 hours with that storm that rolled through.

Hey Josh....yeah it was a lot of fun. Hate those 12hr drives from Denver! I try to never do those!

For the most part it was a different kind of snow wheeling today. Much more high speed stuff. I have a ton of video, having a couple beers and playing with all of it right now. :D

Jason wants to go again next weekend, me too! You are invited also! ;)

Well, this is my two part movie of snow wheeling here in Wyoming.

We were out there for 8hrs+ and we did about 85-90 miles. I shot about 2hrs+ of video and edited it down to 35mins or so. All but the die hard Land Cruiser fans will likely not watch all 35+ minutes! It is not all out the front windshield of my Cruiser, I mixed it up a bit with some other stuff too. Video one starts in the morning and video two ends at night as we exit the mountains. I think the videos were best around sunset, it sure was an awesome and beautiful day we were treated to.

I did have a little drama last weekend wheeling. Nothing major but is has shown another problem as a result.

You may recall me going on about engine mounts back on page 2 or 3. After we fixed a number of things the engine mounts took a back burner. On top of this I don't want to weld in new mounts on my 84 frame. I will be replacing the frame with the 88 so what is the point!? Any ways, I heard the fan contact the shroud a few times last weekend and also the weekend before while wheeling. There is no visable damage to the fan or shroud, none to speak of anyways. It is really minor and only under a heavy throttle when I am bouncing in the rough. Yet, I noticed today this has caused me to get an exhaust leak, where my header flange is and it dumps to the Y-pipe.

My engine mounts are shot, it is obviously causing to much movement in the motor. Don't want to weld in new ones but have to do something. So I may just buy some new AA doughnuts to hold me over until frame swap time.

Besides this (and any new little dramas that come up!) I have a small list of things to do...

-replace my Hella relay for my 550 driving lights. It seems shot, power coming in but not going out no matter what I do.

-Leaking ARB solenoid, spits oil out the solenoid into engine compartment. This is for my rear locker, thought maybe the breather was plugged causing it. Cleaned the breather and still have problem, however seems less. Need to look closer at the rear ARB, I checked the lines and they are all good. Maybe the o-ring?

-Buy and build onboard air system. I bought the box to hold my compressor and wiring. Going to use my Viair portable compressor, just going to take it apart and hard wire it to a pressure switch, switch on dash and plumb it to a 2gallon tank. Also thinking I will dump my ARB compressor and run my lockers off my on-board air system.

-Upgrade a few switches to these... OTRATTW I will eventually go to an in cab winch controlls and at least one large pannel for switches. Will be using the OTRATTW switches only, may use a 12v Guy pannel for the winch.

-bolt down my console and install new stereo with iPod port. I have the stereo already but need to install it in my console and remove the one form the dash.

-Fix my back up lights, I have none. I think it may be the switch on the tranny. Cut a hole or two in my Kaymar rear bumper and install some aux back up lights.

-Replace my Kaymar brake/turn signal lights with some LEDs. The Hella lights in my Kaymar suck, replaced bulbs several times and they keep falling out. All corroded inside and just plain shot. No problem to cut and weld for new light brackets or whatever.

-Have CBI Off-Road build me a tire carrier kit that will suit my Kaymar. Not paying the outrageous price for the Kaymar carrier. Have spoken to CBI who has done much work for me in the past. They can build a kit that I will weld up and install myself. Only going for a carrier, I don't like to carry anything other then the tire outside my truck.

-Have CBI make me a new RHS lower leaf spring plate. I need one that is about 1/2-3/4" longer so my u-bolts are not doing this \ / and I also want to rotate the shock pin 90 degrees. CBI will be cheaper than RuffStuff.

-Have CBI make me a few new axle to sway bar mounts. I want to beef these up, the ones that go over the rubber bushing and are slotted on one side. I think we will just do something that bolts on top and bottom.

-Upgrade my sway bar links to a 1/2" grade 8 bolt and sleeve. I am running a 3/8" grade 5 and it is already tweaked.

-Start on my air intake system. First thing to do is buy a couple silicone fittings and move my air filter. I am also really considering using this.... Poly Performance JEEP/TRUCK & BUGGY*::*Engine & Performance*::*Air Intake Systems & Parts*::*River Raider Air Box (Universal) - 4X4 Off-Road Parts, JK Synergy Suspension Systems, Fox Racing Shox, Beard, CNC Brakes, Johnny Joints®, Currie Enterprises, and then eventually running from that to a Safari snorkel. Won't have the cash for the Safari anytime soon, they are pretty damn expensive! May look into a custom snorkel using silicone and stainless, if it reasonably cheaper to make my own I will go that route.

-Have CBI make me a mount for my high rise jack that will hold it on one side of my rear cargo area. Should be a very simple mount, that is all I need.

-Replace or upgrade my headlights. I have a dead high beam.

-Upgrade my windshield washer nozzles. I don't like mine now that it is winter.

There is more but for now this is what I have found I need to focus on. Two or three trips wheeling and driving the truck around town plus on the HWY in winter conditions has shown me what I need to do. Cargo space needs to be freed up and I need things bolted down so if I roll my truck I won't die! Back up lights are really needed and so on and so forth. In no big hurry for things like in cab winch controls, when I have cash to do it I will. My heater stopped leaking so not worrying about that right now. Truck runs cool now that it is winter, only gotten hot twice in the last 6 weeks. So for right now shroud will be done sometime in the next 4 months.

Most all this stuff is pretty cheap to do. A few hundred bucks here and there as I have spare cash. I need to buy a soldering station and plan to do that soon. I want all my wiring to be soldered and then shrink wrapped. Might as well start on that now since I have wiring to do!

My rims are in route, delivered from M/T to 4Wheelparts in Colorado. So I should see them in a few days. Then I will mount them up and get them balanced. My tire siper is in route too so once it is all here I will go at siping my tires. Already have a plan on that as far as what direction and lugs to sipe.

Well I got my new rear "A" leaf pack from Kurt on Thursday. Got to say CO is top notch, ordered the leaf pack on Tuesday afternoon and by Thursday afternoon it was at my house!...

Thanks again and glad it showed up promptly

Most likely worn or damaged o-rings. Do you know how old your ARB's are? The older seals were a bit more finicky than the newer seal offerings, its a bit of a chore obviously to replace the seals but it can be done in a couple of hours and obviously the rear is the easiest R&R. Some tech info on potential problems here: http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/tech_ARB_troubleshoot.html

...Also thinking I will dump my ARB compressor and run my lockers off my on-board air system.

My personal opinion, if you have the room to spare... keep the ARB compressor for just that, the ARB's and use your new compressor for your other air needs. That way you have a bit of redundancy and you can rig them to serve as a back-up in the case of one failure or another. If you have an older compressor (or smaller compressor) you might look at some of the new ARB offerings, super high output (like air tool output) and still setup for plug and play locker operation.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Kurt! Always appreciate your top service and good advice!

No idea how old my ARBs are, my guess is from 2002. It has got to be the o-rings causing me dramas.

I do need to free up space, especially if I do an air box and snorkel. My ARB compressor is in the way along with my windshield washer resivor. I am planning to mount the Viair compressor and tank in my cargo area.

On a different note.....

I need to find out where this trail is!

legacy_classic_trucks_570x440_03.jpg

This is form a local guys website. He builds Power Wagons mostly but also Cruisers. He has that picture on his website. I keep hearing he knows where some good trails are so will have to see if he will give up it's location!

X2 .. works for my for about 8 or 9 years in Tencha .. I also have it inside .. as covered and dry as posible. I haven't had any compressor failure in all these years ..

well I am not looking to replace the ARB because of failure. Rather, to free up space and have a single air system for all my needs. IE, less complicated.

I have had the Viair for 3+yrs. The wires started to fray, which I have fixed, otherwise the thing has given me zero problems. But I am not wanting to drop a bunch of money on a new comrpessor or a pre-built air system. I think if I use what I have already and just buy what I need I can get it all done for $100-150.

These bad boys just showed up today....

Super stoked! I have an appointment tomorrow to have them mounted and balanced. Fairly confident these will work with no issues but still....I have my fingers crossed! FYI, it is a M/T classic in black 16"x8" with a 3.65" backspacing. I think my tire groover also showed up today, didn't feel like waiting in line at the post office so will find out tomorrow.

It was puking some snow the other day so I took this picture of the Cruser. As you can see the truck sits nice and level with no more Cruiser lean! These rims are a 16x7 with about 2" of BS. I am mounting these tires to the new M/T rims, tires are 35x12.5x16 Maxxis Creepies.

I bought some MAF 6" rear shackle plates a few weeks back. But since the new B leaf pack went in I have not felt like I wanted or needed them. I currently have a 5 1/2" shackle in the rear. If I find the rear sags over time I can install the 6" plates then. I also have another add a leaf I can toss in the pack if I want but right now it is all about as good as it can get without some fairly serious mods.

Well, the M/T wheels are mounted. It took them 3hrs, sigh. Must be a few pounds of weights on each rim, I was kind of expecting that since the Creepies are so aggressive. I had the truck up to 65mph since the wheels went on, it is as smooth as silk! I rather liked the stance before, it was at least a couple inches wider. I also liked the narrower 7" wide rims. Yet, my brakes are tucked into the rims nicely now and is about perfect as far as that goes. I like how the M/T look so overall I am happy.

There is more room between the tres and the rim then it looks like, a solid inch is about what it is. Calipers also clear no probs.

Nice Josh, cool pictures, thanks for that!

Yeah, I am up for it this weekend. I was going to see if Jason wanted to go too. Not many more weekends left before it is time to just get the skis/snowboard out. ;)

Another day of snow wheeling!

Carnage for the day....

ME:
broken front axle shaft
exhaust leak is pretty bad now
stereo is needs some new wiring - currently dead
e-brake frozen solid

Josh 86 FJ60:
nothing as far as I know!

Jason 84 4Runner:
busted front ARB line - they are brittle when it is 5 degrees outside!
smashed tailgate abd blew out back window - slid off road and hit a tree
leaking cooling system

Otherwise all is well!

Josh got a new ARB locker in the other day and it transformed his truck. We had to wincha number of times today, at least one was a fairly technical double winch job to rescue Jason. I snapped a front axle trying to climb out of a creek, I don't think the CV exploded just snapped the axle shaft.

I have a bit of video, no epic long movies this time! Will post the video in a while....
