Very cool pictures! Looks like we'll be driving through some white areas going to see my Grandparents in MN this month. I can't wait!

So I picked up a set of used front axles the other day from a Cruiser friend here in town.

Installed the new (used) LHS axle last night. The busted one was not as bad as I thought it might be and was not the stub axle or splines broken. It was the actual CV that gave up. However it was the internal piece that holds the balls that is cracked and toast. The outer CV and the shafts are fine. I have become pretty good at tearing down the front axle now, know all the little tricks, what size every bolt is, torque specs on everything, ect.

I have 4wd back now which makes me happy. Unfortunately the used CV clicks with the locker in and at full lock. But hey it has 150,000 mles on it and only cost me a 1/2 rack of beers so I can't complain!

I really need to extend my axle breathers because I found the rear was not hooked up. I think flexing the truck made it come off. So will probably extend those soon and will change my rear axle fluid in the next day or two. Oh and my e-brake thawed out and worked, for about 5mins and then I think it froze up again! Need to look into it more closely.

Picked up some wire yesterday so hope to install my other stereo soon which is going in my console.

I have some other things in the works but nothing right away as I need to buy some stuff.

Alrighty....as per previous posts about the Ranger and clutch.

I called AA. They do indeed use a special t/o bearing and retainer. The guy on the phone said something about FJ40. They also use a pressure plate with flat springs or fingers.

The guy on the phone said he has a buddy with a v8 FJ40 running a Napa clutch and it is no probs and the guy likes it. That is what was in my truck when I got it and what I replaced the clutch with, ie Napa assembly.

The clutch from AA is roughly $225 with the t/o bearing included.

What got me going on this recently and made me call AA is....it feels like there is a tiny bit of clutch drag sometimes. Not all the time just sometimes. I don't smell burning clutch though. As anybody with the same set up as me knows, the slave has a really short throw. My clutch engages close to the floor. My personal preference is I like a clutch that engages a bit farther out. When I got my truck it supposedly had a new clutch in it. But the first week of owning the truck the t/o bearing started making noise. So we pulled it out. I noted at the time the disc looked new but had an odd wear section on it, like it was dragging but only on one side of the disc. Besides this the whole clutch looked new. However the P/O did not change out the pilot bushing and that was shot in my truck. So we put in a new pilot bushing and a new clutch at the same time. My current Napa clutch is not giving me any problems other then I mentioned above.

The guy on the phone at AA said it should be no problem to run my Napa clutch. It just may wear out faster then normal, makes sense to me. So I am not going to change out the clutch right now. Rather just wait till it starts to go and then put in the AA clutch set up at that time. I am posting this though for anybody with a similar set up and to just get the general info out there. If you got a v8 and or a Ranger or whatever in there and are wondering....just call AA and they will set you straight!

I assume you are keeping the 60 now since I see all of your ads and ebay were removed?

All of my ads? Didn't realize I had a bunch of ads out there....

I have the truck listed here on Mud & on ExPo, that is it. And I am not bumping the threads all the time or lowering my price to try and sell the truck.

Ebay, I listed the truck once, it didn't sell. I got a whole bunch of people messaging me during the auction wanting to buy it. I guess they thought I would sell this truck for $5,000!

I own the truck outright. I could use some cash. The Cruiser to me is a liquid asset. If somebody wants to come along and give me $16,000 for it I will sell the truck. Heck I will even sell it for $15.5k!! Otherwise I am in no hurry to sell the truck. In fact I would like to keep it. Which is why I am continueing to fix it up and imporve it.

Just read through your thread. You sure have a nice rig! I envy that motor.

TK

Thanks!

Well a 94 FZJ80 rolling chassis pretty much just fell into my lap. A guy on ExPo messaged me offering to trade the chassis for a set of 35" MTRs. The chassis is even getting delivered to me so I am game!

Had not really wanted to go to this extreme with my truck but I can't turn down the chassis. The end result is going to be killer. I have been pricing things I will need such as lifted coil springs and axle rebuild kits. I will have to put some cash into this but it shouldn't be to bad. The way I see it is I have a rolling chassis, a super clean FJ62 and then my truck. Out of all this I can build a super sweet Cruiser! The great thing too is my truck won't need to be down very long since I have the FJ62 and FZJ80 chassis. I can keep driving my truck while the bulk of the work is done. Also if I need to sell my FJ60 I can do that and keep the FJ62 plus FZJ80 chassis. At that point all I would need is an engine and a tranny since I have a spare t-case in the FJ62.

It is looking like I won't be able to use my LRA tank, if that is the case I will sell it and get a custom tank made. I will also likely sell my front axle under the FJ60 now. Plus my new suspension. That should help me recover some cash for the project. Most of the cash for the project will go into ARB lockers, suspension and axle rebuild kits.

I won't start on this project until spring but plan to work on it all this coming summer. I should have the rolling chassis by the end of this month.

status? any updates?

Yeah, the FZJ80 chassis is getting delivered to me by the end of the week.

I rounded up a whole bunch of little stuff for my truck. I just have not had the time to do anything yet. That and my buddy next door with a shop has been real busy so no free shop space for me as of late.

Bummer. Looking forward to how this goes down. I have a 60 body on an 80 chassis. It currently sits outside my shop waiting for me to throw an engine tranny and tcase in it. One thing at a time though. I have to put a powertrain back in my 55 first....

The 94 FZJ80 chassis showed up last night. I got everything except 3rd members and front coil springs. The chassis looks killer, next to no rust on it. The front axle housing is a non-elocker, exactly what I wanted and it is in very good condition.

I will start on this once the snow is melted off. I don't have a shop or garage to work on it as I please. I do have a shop I can use but not 24/7. So a lot of this project will be done outside in my yard.

I will post pictures soon, it is snowing right now so I need to go outside and move the random parts inside out of the weather.

My plan of attack is to simply get the axles under the frame, the front is not under it and is in pieces. Then I will have a real rolling chassis. I then plan to get the body on the FJ62 off it's frame and start figuring out body mounts plus the frame chop. After that I will build up the axles and suspension as I have cash available for it.

Battery is dead in my camera, so while I wait for it to charge here is my plan for the 80s axles & suspension.

Source 3rds, looks like $300 each give or take gets me those.

Hellfire knuckle upgrade on front axle, do not plan to run hemis

HellFire Fabworks | FJ80 Ultimate Knuckle and Highsteer upgrade

ARBs in both diffs, I only need to purchase the front

Slee 4" or 6" coils all around & Slee control arms/links

Possible 100-series brake upgrade, at least pads, haven't looked into if more is possible

Free wheeling hub mod, from what I have seen all I need to do is groove the outer axle shaft.

Longfield axles in the front

Front diff skid

rebuild kits for both axles

That is really about it. if I really felt I needed it I suppose I can go with some Polyperformance rear axle shafts. I plan to use the Bilstein 5150 shocks under my FJ60 now.

how did you survive with that much snow after spending 3 months in Catalina .?

hijack over !

Good question bro and I have no idea how I am surviving it!! Catalina sure would be sweet right about now, or anywhere in Panama for that matter.

I ordered a bunch of small parts a while back and just got around to putting them in yesterday. The wiring in my Cruiser was/is a mess so it took me awhile to get this all done.

First up is new shifter and billet knob from Valley Hybrids

Green dash LED lights & LED dome light. I only had about half of my dash lights before, none on heater and so forth. So this is a huge improvement.

And the new Hella H4s plus I moved my Hella driving lights. Not sure if I will leave my driving lights pointed so far out to the sides, experimenting.

and a video of all this stuff.....I forgot how to embed videos here on Mud.

1984 FJ60 Land Cruiser Hella H4 headlight & LED dash light upgrade - YouTube

It turns out my rear cargo lights assembly is shot. I even tried to use the one out of the FJ62 and it is also toast. I did buy a LED for that too but since the assembly doesn't work it does me no good! Not sure if I will just replace the cargo light assembly with something after market, I likely will as the stock light assembly is pretty cheesy. I got some more things to do like new motor mounts, build a fan shroud and change the oil in my gear boxes.

cheers
