Rivian R1S vs LC thoughts? (2 Viewers)

Have no idea what to do but i have to buy an EV to balance the stable. Hoping to not spend too much.

Any advice? Used Tesla? Lease a bmw x whatever for a year and see how it lives?

I want something small and fast. With the aim of being a sporty complement to the pig at home.

I know used Teslas are an options minefield? Or a build quality lottery.

What to do? A $500 payment would be nice, for something that will be trafficked and run through auto washes etc, that i wont have to “worry” about.

FWIW, when I still lived urban I had a G37x. Fantastic value. Quick. No BMW finicky systems. A 4-dr Z. You can get 30 on the highway at 65. Low 20s in town. But 328 hp and AWD. And $9,000 for 48k miles. One of the best values out there.

Why do you 'have' to buy an EV? You can get high 30's / low 40's commonly with ICE these days. Low mile used Camry for example.

Im a doomsday prepper, and systems engineer.
So it would be for (paranoid) redundancy, diverse source energy dependence, (i keep a fueled generator too) and of course driving like a hooligan as a bonus.

Plus I want to do as absolutely little maintenance as possible, and charging at home every night would make range meaningless for me since I have the long haul cruiser.

I know they do require maintenance still, but its nothing like the 200 is getting pampered with.

My advice to you would be to duplicate your 'help me understand the appeal' thread on other vehicle forums so that you're not salty or disappointed after your purchase.

If i called King Elon out over there, and asked for REAL feedback, i would have a ban quicker than ludicrous mode 0-60 time.

I’ll jump in on this EV “Tread“. I am looking to add an EV to my garage so to keep useless miles off the 200. My goal for the EV is short range travel “under 250” miles and running errands. I looked and sat in many new/used ev flavors over the last week with the family. My local dealer had an RS1 but not for sale at the moment. It‘s the dealership owners suv. He happens to be my wife’s girlfriends Uncle as we find out. Anyways, he let us drive it for 30mins. I told him it was pretty amazing as I didn’t want to be rude. Truth be told, the seats are very firm and uncomfortable. The suv is very noisy as the air suspension kept leveling itself oh the highway and coming out of corners. The noise isn’t as bad when you’re the driver but kid in the third row said it wasn’t very nice back there with the constant sounds. The RS1 has a neat “cool” factor for sure but I much preferred other EVs we drove hands down. Something else we noticed, it’s a bit bumpy and wallows a bit for our taste. My kid was getting car sick and my wife couldn’t wait to be done.

We also test drove the BMW ix m60. Now this road so much better and the interior quailty and build felt pretty great. However, no way am I paying $120k for a fugly ev. The interior is great, the exterior not for us. Also, it lacks cargo capacity.

The EV I would buy but holding off until Elon can get the hardware updated to HW4 is the Model Y Performance. This one shocked me the most. I am not a Tesla fan but this new MYP with the comfort suspension, better acoustics and higher build quality from previous year was a surprise. We test drove the MY long range and it had a bit of a wallow coming off of bumps. The MYP on the other hand was a marked improvement. They are both very quiet, zero creaks/rattles and very little wind noise. The Performance version just seemed much more dialed in and we compared it to my wife’s X3 over speed bumps, broken pavement,etc. The Tesla was just better all around.

Going back to the Rivian, I honestly believe people that buy them are in the honeymoon phase. After test driving one and starting to people trading them in more often, it needs more improvement if they are asking upwards to $100k for these. I would absolutely take a new Model X over it and if you haven’t driven the refreshed one, oh man is it leagues more quiet and comfortable then the Rivian…granted you’re not taking the X off-roading but how many people are taking the Rivian off-road overall.

In the end, it comes down to the charging network and Elon is well ahead of everyone and I suspect he’ll charge higher pricing to non-teslas if he opens up the network. I know Elon said he’ll only open up the network for fed-money if the government pays for Tesla only chargers parallel to all the Supercharger locations giving Tesla owners there own chargers.

i just changed my vote from maybe to never in a million lifetimes.

I got quality aftermarket adjustable shocks for it, but even with fine-tuned damping, I can't get it to ride worth a damn. Overly-stiff linear spring rate. Maybe I need to find some used take-off 2023 suspension to swap in. I can't argue that for a local commuting appliance, the tesla has been a big win and 100% dead nuts reliable over 73k miles, despite it's quality issues.

Your review of the M3 is exactly why i never wanted one when I test drove a couple models a few years ago. A Tesla sales/service center opened up nearby and thought we’d give it another chance as we really like the idea of plug-in and go. Before, decided to place a reservation for 30min test drives, I searched the Tesla owners forums, Yt reviews,etc and it appears the build quality is not the issue it once was. This for us was very true after overly inspecting the gaps, paint,interior trim, so on. I don’t even do this when I‘m buying any of my cars to this degree. Anyhow, I was thoroughly impressed. I test drove 3 different MY’s and two separate occasions over a week. We were really trying to not like it and Tesla just knocked the prices down by $10-13k two weeks ago. When I compare current pricing, to me nothing comes close. The stereo system was very good, better than my wife’s HK in the Bimmer by a mile and going 0-60 in 3.5secs is fun and who comes even close to this for $60k.

edit update- I forgot to mention, the Tesla UI is the best I’ve used and the cameras are better then the Rivian we were in. The Rivian UI is not nearly as intuitive.

Lexus ES300H. I drove one and they are boring but I mean that in the best way. They are super quiet and comfy inside. Can get MPG’s in the high 30’s to low 40’s, Lexus dealer experience, reliable, etc.

No prepper that I know would bank on an EV right now. Much more of a fault-intolerant system than an ICE. If you want to hedge on future energy costs then perhaps, but right now it's hard to justify EVs as a cost savings, at least in many major markets.

The prepper's wet dream is a multi-fuel deuce-and-a-half. Zero circuitry. Can bump start while running used tranny fluid as fuel.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I think I've mentioned my wife has a Tesla Model 3 as her daily driver. 50k on it now. Literally the only finger I've ever bothered to lift is inflate tires 3x, and rotate tires 2x. That's it. Never have taken it into service, WTF is an oil change?, never a smog check, detour to get gas???... it just runs without needing attention.

Tesla naysayers will always find fault. Sure, it's not perfect. It's not as well insulated and noisier on the freeway. The ride is firmer. Some minor rattles.

But is any car ever perfect?

My 200-series and Porsche are not perfect. I don't make excuses for any of them, but they are what they are and I don't have unreasonable expectations for any of them because they are built for purpose. In those purposes - not much touches any of these 3 cars in their area of superlatives. Most mainstream luxury and performance cars are snore for me.

The Tesla is quick as hell and the drivetrain efficiency, electronics, and UI are unparalleled. It was a damn good value, especially if talking lifecycle costs.

What about if im just LARPING though? Lol

The prepper angle is really just as a tool to go hunt for fuel for the 200 to offroad bugout. Or if fuel isnt available, charge using my tri fuel genny and get to somewhere less dense. Although none of those scenarios would ever play out living in the heart of any major city.

The idea is there though, given the right climate for solar.

Agreed though to your point a diesel is the real deal. With a tank buried in the back yard. Just hit up the burger king oil drum. Haha
