Rivian R1S vs LC thoughts?

Would you trade in your Land Cruiser for a Rivian R1S/R1T?

What happens to all these trucks if Rivian goes bankrupt? Will another company pick up service/spare parts manufacturing?

I personally don't think they will have any issues recapitalizing. They have a huge contract with Amazon and a massive backlog of pre-orders. There is demand, money to be made. If the current ownership structure changed, private equity would come and scoop up the bones.

Not saying it can't happen, but unlikely. They have product that people want. This is not true of other automakers who went out of business (aka companies like Saab, Fisker, etc).

Everyone has short memories on how long it took Tesla to steer out of the ditch as they scaled manufacturing and delivery. They lost money on every car for years and now are one of the most profitable automakers in the world.

EV charging network is not ready…good luck getting a non-Tesla vehicle!

Why is that we have 12x the amount of EV trucks than cars or SUVs now? Has USA spoiled the pot chasing F-150 numbers?

Im not sure why Tesla is cybertrucking and long haul trucking and have yet to put out a proper big body SUV?

Alot of this era makes zero sense. Id still take an R1S sure, but not like there is a single competitor outside of the Hummer EV-SUV which is again a follow up to the truck launch.

in my opinion truck guys are literally the last segment to want electric. And they die with towing.’

Seriously dont get it.

I agree with this. Truck owners (and maybe Land Cruiser owners lol) will be late adopters / laggards because EVs aren’t good at truck stuff like towing.

Given that cars are basically a dead segment, starting with a crossover or a Tahoe-sized suv would make way more sense.

It’s got to be because of how popular trucks are here in states. Personally I miss the days of having variety… coupes, sedans, wagons, real SUV’s, small pick ups, even full size pick ups when they weren’t so big and you could get them in single cab/short bed configurations. Nowadays you can have a full size pick up in crew cab short bed only, or a cross over 🤢

I miss wagons too, now days you can’t touch a decent one unless it’s a Euro over $120K. I still want a W123 300D wagon for an around town daily.

EVs are a fad.

Makes you think right? Someone brought this up very recently but are jeep and maybe subaru the only brands that stayed in their lane? That was a very poignant observation.

Jeep makes only SUVs, all the way from literal s*** tier to not so s*** super luxury tier now.

Subaru only makes whatever the hell it is they do. Sport hatch crossovers? You know, for their, um, how do i say this? clientELLE…
Haha.

But its a bizarro world out there of lambo urus’, porsche cayennes and everything in between from volvo to rolls royce. Id def take a Bentley Bentaiga though…

I guess Gary V was right when he said only thing there exists today of value is brand. At least its turned out to be very true in the hyper corporatized world we are in.

Rich called this problem out too.

It won’t be forever, but it seems rough at the moment. I’m a Tesla owner and this is night and day, compared to Tesla’s charger network.

Tesla is opening up their network to CCS, several in SoCal are already open … they want in on the federal money.

On towing, it honestly tows fantastic and has an 11k rating. Problem is range, it’s a 50% hit which means 150mi of range. But honestly, a 200 gets ~9mpg towing in my experience, so it’s really not that different other than the ability to fill up quickly.

Lastly - on range anxiety and charging, I thought it was going to be a huge deal. I charge it once a week at home on my L2 charger, that’s all I need for my everyday commute. On road trips, most places the nav maps out a detailed route with stops and duration at each. Sure it’s 20-30min instead of 5-10, sometimes chargers are broken or you have to wait or find another station. But it’s not really a huge deal unless you are going off the beaten path, which honestly sucks at this point but can be worked around with careful planning.

My $.02. It’s also a blast to drive 😉

Towing affects everybody’s range. The issue is that the LC200 can refuel in less than 5 min from empty.

EVs recharge from empty to full takes 40+ min?

No. They might be good trucks I don't know much about them but I haven't accepted the whole electric vehicle idea yet. The buzz I get driving my 80 is something ddifferent. Infact I'm going back in time I'm thinking of acquiring 70 series next. So no for me I wouldn't trade my Landcruiser for an electric truck.

I’ll jump in on this EV “Tread“. I am looking to add an EV to my garage so to keep useless miles off the 200. My goal for the EV is short range travel “under 250” miles and running errands. I looked and sat in many new/used ev flavors over the last week with the family. My local dealer had an RS1 but not for sale at the moment. It‘s the dealership owners suv. He happens to be my wife’s girlfriends Uncle as we find out. Anyways, he let us drive it for 30mins. I told him it was pretty amazing as I didn’t want to be rude. Truth be told, the seats are very firm and uncomfortable. The suv is very noisy as the air suspension kept leveling itself oh the highway and coming out of corners. The noise isn’t as bad when you’re the driver but kid in the third row said it wasn’t very nice back there with the constant sounds. The RS1 has a neat “cool” factor for sure but I much preferred other EVs we drove hands down. Something else we noticed, it’s a bit bumpy and wallows a bit for our taste. My kid was getting car sick and my wife couldn’t wait to be done.

We also test drove the BMW ix m60. Now this road so much better and the interior quailty and build felt pretty great. However, no way am I paying $120k for a fugly ev. The interior is great, the exterior not for us. Also, it lacks cargo capacity.

The EV I would buy but holding off until Elon can get the hardware updated to HW4 is the Model Y Performance. This one shocked me the most. I am not a Tesla fan but this new MYP with the comfort suspension, better acoustics and higher build quality from previous year was a surprise. We test drove the MY long range and it had a bit of a wallow coming off of bumps. The MYP on the other hand was a marked improvement. They are both very quiet, zero creaks/rattles and very little wind noise. The Performance version just seemed much more dialed in and we compared it to my wife’s X3 over speed bumps, broken pavement, etc. The Tesla was just better all around.

Going back to the Rivian, I honestly believe people that buy them are in the honeymoon phase. After test driving one and starting to people trading them in more often, it needs more improvement if they are asking upwards to $100k for these. I would absolutely take a new Model X over it and if you haven’t driven the refreshed one, oh man is it leagues more quiet and comfortable then the Rivian…granted you’re not taking the X off-roading but how many people are taking the Rivian off-road overall.

In the end, it comes down to the charging network and Elon is well ahead of everyone and I suspect he’ll charge higher pricing to non-teslas if he opens up the network. I know Elon said he’ll only open up the network for fed-money if the government pays for Tesla only chargers parallel to all the Supercharger locations giving Tesla owners there own chargers.

i just changed my vote from maybe to never in a million lifetimes.

That's good, honest feedback and I appreciate that. Nothing about the EV game appeals to me in the least at present but I am paying attention. My only experience with the Rivian was in the R1T and it was a short 5-10 minute ride but I noticed the lack of refinement in terms of cabin noise and ride comfort. I will say that I feel like the Rivian has better build quality in regards to the exterior panels and their gaps, every Tesla I've ever been around feels half ass in that regard.

This is a Land Cruiser forum and I’m certainly not here to sell anyone on Rivian or EVs. Net-net all of you will be driving something other than a Cruiser if you want a new vehicle, that’s what led me to opening up my horizons after 25 years. It will most likely be hybrid or electric when you do, no matter who makes it.
