Sorry if this is a dumb question because it is in some old thread., but does anyone know if it is possible to take fj60 rear backing plates, brakes with parking brake cables and retrofit them on an older 40? -- and I know that the late 40s already have the auto-adj. brakes and parking brake but the 60 parts would be more available. Thanx, just curious.

Good question. Most folks just upgrade to RDB.

Yea but if you get the parts cheap it can solve a few issues, like the adjusting, parking brake and having a matched set with the front disk and master. If it's possible on a bolt-on basis then the hardest part would be rigging the cables for the p-brake- and probably a lot cheaper than disk.

To make it a bolt on swap, the entire 81-newer fj40 rear axle is needed, because the end flange of the axle housing, where the drum backing plate is attached, is significantly diffrent, in bolt pattern and positioning.

P-brake cable is not too difficult by retrofitting the floor mounted p-brake handle from any 81-90 FJ40/60/62. And use 81-later FJ40 p-brake cable.
