Use GL4. GL5 isn't compatible with some of the parts in the trans. Residual gear lube can get trapped in the bearing retainer that doesn't drain back into the tranny.

What purpose does that serve?

Cuz if you can't break the fill plug free/1st and you drain the oil, one can't fill it.

Prioritizing the prep more before continuing the clutch replacement. Took the advice of one of the experienced people on here and called the tech line of the mfg of the replacement clutch. That turned out to be good advice. PB is right, we don't have to remove the bellhousing but the tech recommended it. Wrote about 15 steps from the mechanic on the tech line, and also found this video of removing the bellhousing. Not sure if he is doing it right but it shows at least what bolts to remove. For other people in noobland, make sure to put minimal grease on splines of input shaft and clutch disk. Just enough to make it slick but not visibly greasy. If any grease gets on the clutch disk it ruins it and has to be swapped again according to what tech line told me.

Why do you have to remove the bellhousing? Are you doing more than a clutch replacement? The bellhousing is part of the motor mounts. All the clutch parts slide out of the bottom of it. You rotate the flywheel to get to the bolts. Did the tech you talked to ever work on a 40? You should remove the flywheel so you can get it resurfaced. Fyi, I didnt

I'll call him again tomorrow and ask him. I'm just going to get the pressure plate and possibly the flywheel out tonight. He told me to hit the flywheel with some fine sandpaper and clean it off with a rag sprayed with brake cleaner. Also to spray some brake cleaner on the pressure plate and clean it. Check for burs on input shaft and bearings. 40channel removed it without removing the bellhousing. I dread undoing the motor mounts if I have to. Trust me I'd rather not mess with that if I don't have to. He was trying to tell me that the larger rounded side of the throwout bearing points to the pressure plate (aka away from the clutch fork and retainer hub. Does this sound correct to you? I'm not replacing anything beyond the clutch. But I do intend to take tranny off again to put on some new seals and gaskets.

Theres no reason to remove the b/h. You'll just be bolting back on. If the flywheel doesn't have ton of hot spots, and is true, cleaning it up might be OK.

Nevermind. Reverse lamp uses M18 - 1.5.
