Hi guys... I am wanting to replace the cable on my factory winch on my 73, and I am wondering what size and length of cable is recommended? Thanks!!!

Thanks Wayne

1/2 seems a tad overkill, no? Isn't that about a 35,000 lb weight rating? On a 40?

I'm all for overkill... but seems to me that 7/16 (around 25K lbs) or 3/8 is probably plenty, and offers a significant savings on both space on the spool and $$ in the pocket.

Having said all that, I'm not a frequent winch user and have to admit that Wayne's got a lot more real-world experience winching than I do.

i went to the shop to purchase some 7?16 ths and they wanted a HUGE dollar but told me i could get 1/2" for half the cost... that is the only reason i mentioned the larger rope...

1/2" is WAY overkill but the price is right and since it is rope it won't kink and bind like the steel 1/2" does...

Any idea how much of that (1/2"/7/16"?) would fit comfortably on an 8274 drum? My cable's getting a little frayed here and there, and I'm formulating a Christmas wish list... :D

1/2" will limit you to about 100 feet or less. 3/8" will just barely make 150 feet.

But I would go a slightly larger diameter and a shorter rope and then add a 50 or 100 foot extension to the kit bag. Reason being that the shorter line will be closer to the cl of the winch drum and you will not be limited to the outer diameter poor pull load.

There are a number of calculators on the net that will allow you to enter the drum size and then kick out the max rope length.

This is the one I use.

100 feet of 1/2" rope isn't much lead, but with 100 feet extension and for 1/2 the price sounds like a good deal, where did you have that priced out Wayne?

at some shop here in Calgary, i can't remeber the name but i know the location... typical of my mind...

Thanks guys; that calculator is pretty slick. I keep some wire rope stored in an old motocross tire for extensions now, but something like amsteel would sure be a lot easier to store...

I need to replace my winch cable on my BJ74. this amsteel rope sounds great. What is the smallest diameter you all would recomend(more length) and how do I find out what size my drum is. Thanks all
