Actually, they aren't even very good for that. Just get paper towels.
The factory service manual is the only one to have.
As if you need more advice... Factory Service manual, nothing else even comes close. Look up Toyota Publications on Google, then you can call 'em and order, same place the dealer gets it, without the mark up.

unfortunately for you and me.....the 1997 repair manuals are backordered and have been for sometime with no expected delivery date. Please do call them...im hoping that if they get a lot of calls then they will go ahead and reprint them.
Please help the information needy and create a factory manual in .pdf If you want to spend no money at all, this forum is the best resource. You can find practically anything you need to know here; if you can sort the wheat from the chaff.
For 3rd party manuals I tend to gravitate toward the Haynes manuals. The information and layout of the manual itself is very user friendly. I have not used a Chilton's manual in a number of years, but when I did I always found the small text & general layout of information on the page somewhat hard to read.
The Factory Service Manual contains the most information. If you can get one used or new, they are worth it if you plan on keeping your vehicle an extended period of time.
If you like creating directories & downloading endless .pdf files you can get a 2 day ($15) subscription to Toyota's odd to navigate techinfo.toyota.com website. Here you have access to all Toyota/Lexus/Scion manuals since 1990.
As tirewater said, all the FSM info is available online at Toyota's tech info website, for a nominal cost. Would take a bit of work to download it all manually. There are a bunch of us who were able to download entire documents using automated software, but it doesn't work that way anymore. If you have the time, it would be great to download all pertinent info, but it is also worth the ~$100 for the paper manual from Toyota.
FSM for my 96 was available back in April this year no problem direct from Toyota...but the EWD has been backordered since...not sure if they will ever get around to publishing it again.
Word of advice, is order one direct from Toyota now, instead of waiting, as they may go out of print.

i called toyota direct this morning and they said that they are at least 8+ weeks until the get their back orders at best. about ready to just bit the bullet and get the electronic version but i would really like a paper edition. any one want to sell a used version?

As an additional reply to the OP - I have always hated Chilton, illustrations suck and hard to understand, very vague. I have generally liked haynes for my tahoes, vws, etc. I bought the Haynes for the cruiser, and it covered too many years, too many configurations to be easy to use. My kids bought me the FSM from Toyota for Fathers day last year, it is a site to behold - Three inches thick and pertaining to only your specific year, it is great!!!

I just ordered my EWD manual from Helm, same pricing as Toyota guys $60. their # is 800-782-4356. thats the only manual they sell for us
I bought my EWD off of ebay for $39.00 with free shipping from faxbook. It arrived in perfect condition.

Cyclo steve I have and ELLERLY book the aussie one and i love it . For me being a one bannana the plain english and real pics are a big help. Of course i always use the FSM along with it. The aussies do a few things different.
How did you join all the PDFs together? Once joined do any of the links to other sections of the manual work?
