Have a 64 FJ40 that was painted inside and outside with some sort of Herculiner or bedliner. Was wondering if you guys had any tips or suggestions on what has worked best for you. I would really like to get it off and paint the outside of the truck if I can.

A PO covered the wife's 74 with durabak before I bought it. Aftersitting in the Texas sun for several years it looked like this:

I scraped the remaining liner off the outside with a set of wood chisels from Harbor Freight. I was lucky that he had used an epoxy primer underneath though, I only cut through to bare metal in a few spots which I primered over. It was then sanded and sprayed with rust convertor to stop the rust.

Second that. It can be torched and scraped, but it's a complete nightmare. Media blast if you can convince someone to do it. They don't actually like to do it. The media bounces off, so it's a pretty time consuming process.
I will no longer buy a truck that someone has done that to. It's the quickest way to ruin a vehicle I know of ,in my opinion. I think I would rather deal with rust.

Thanks guys

I had a clutch master leaking fluid onto to hurculined floor in an old 40 I had. That stuff peeled off easily. Brushed some on the outside quarter panel and same result. Brush it on wait for it to soak in and a plastic scraper peels it off pretty well.

Will give that a try tomorrow

I ended up wire wheeling off a good bit. There are specific paint stripper heads you can get. Airplane stripper and chisels work well, add in a heat gun too. It takes forever. I cleaned mine up and then had a blaster do the spots I couldn’t fit a wheel in. Came out great

Unfortunately the painter put lizard skin back on the interior tub. He said we should lizard skin the bottom to keep down heat. I thought he meant undercoating. Now I have to go through the stripping process all over.

I'm sorry but first you must find he that sprayed said bedliner on this FJ40. You will find a old junker car from the 1930's and set it on a road in a ambush location. Use bailing wire to tie this idiot into the car along with a female mannequin dressed in a flapper dress. Then get all your buddies to buy old shotguns and at least 3 BAR, Browning Automatic Rifles. Then get drunk and act out the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde but first tell the idiot that he should feel honored that he is being compared to someone who actually mattered in our history. Pump hundreds of rounds into the car missing him with all of them. Then paint his naked body with bedliner and roll him in feathers. Send him walking down the dirt road to find a ride because he doesn't deserve to ride in a TLC.

I started to remove the Bedliner today and it actually is going pretty well. I went to autozone to pick up aircraft paint remover and they only had the rustoluem version. I got lucky and it was on sale for $13 gallon instead of 41 so I figured it couldn’t hurt to try it. The previous owner must of put 4 or 5 coats of the Bedliner on, so I lightly scraped the entire body with a flat blade so the stripper could get into the paint. I Put a thick coat on it and worked it in with the brush and then covered it with plastic to keep the moisture in. Really happy with how well it’s going. Going to go try to get more done once the power comes back on, a transformer blew down the street

Power came back on a hour ago and got the rest of the driver side quarter panel and most of the passenger side done. Hopefully have all the Bedliner off the entire outside by tomorrow afternoon

Nice work! I couldn’t even imagine having to strip that crap off. Definitely need patience on your side.
