Do the front/middle seats need to be removed, or can the carpets be removed with seats in place?

What's the best cleaner for these carpets? Anyone?

Thanks

I just had all my seats in my LC out last month doing the stereo system and they do hold the carpet in.

The seats have to be removed to pull the carpet.

I recently did this and power washed the carpet after scrubbing with oxy-clean. I replaced the insulation under the front piece. The rear section wasnt nearly as bad and I used my steam cleaner on it.

Big difference. My truck smells much better.

I'm getting ready to clean mine. I'm pretty sure the front and rear seats have to come out. I believe the main carpet stops just behind the rear seats and there is a separate piece under the jump seats.

A friend of mine does auto interior work. He recommended removing the carpet completely and using a pressure washer (carefully on low pressure.) Also, if there is any foam backing, remove it before cleaning the carpet. After cleaning, hang the carpet somewhere for a couple of days to dry out completely before re-installing it.

That's my $0.02 worth.

Rip it all out and Line-X the interior. ;)

take your carpets to an esporta wash outlet, they mostly do hockey gear but will do horse blankets and all kinds of smelly stuff.
patented system and odor removal is their specialty.

You have to pull all seats, but it's not that hard. You also have to pull other things like door thresholds and the console. It is worth it.
I lay a bar or 2x4 over two ladders and drape the carpet over it. Fill a pump-up yard sprayer with liquid Tide and water. Soak the carpet well and let sit. Then just wash them with the hose. I wash everything else while it is out.
I always do this when I buy a used car. After that if it gets dirty again it is my dirt, not someone elses. Then I don't care as much.

I prefer oxy clean. Soap residue will attract and hold dirt.

I would also powerwash/rinse thoroughly. This will be easier/ more efficient depending on the amount and type of surfactant used.

x2 on the liner...if my carpet comes out it isn't going back in!

I cleaned mine this weekend. I pulled the carpet completely out, removed the padding, and cleaned it with Resolve + Oxy clean. I also used non-chlorinated brake cleaner on some of the tough spots (be careful with this stuff.) Then I pressure washed it and rinsed until the water ran clean. Not every spot came out, but overall it is very clean.

I agree with MacGyver, at least now it will be my dirt. ;)

Just a thought... I haven't done it on my LC yet, but I did this on my first-gen 4Runner (mainly so the carpets could be removed when the top was off for the summer):

I removed the carpets, and carefully cut them in strategic points so they could be removed without pulling the seats out. The door thresholds and the centre console keep them in place, but they're much easier to remove to wash, or when you think you're going to be fording water.

I'll be doing this on the LC at some point.
