Replacing rear differential on 1972 FJ55. I removed locking pin, guide pin, and spacer block. After I removed diff, I found these two conical washers (shown in photo) lying in bottom of axle housing. I did not see where they fell from. I am replacing third members so if they belong to old diff, please confirm that I do not need them. I'm concerned they somehow go on axle shaf

t end and therefore reason for question. Thanks.

gnob, thanks. I came in from the garage to amend this post. I discovered my answer when I tried to reinsert the long axle shaft side. As I installed it I knocked both washers and spider gears out. How to I reinstall these? I can get one or the other in place but then of course one can't rotate the mass to install the other one. What is the sequence? Kind of get both started and then rotate bothinto place simultaneously/ I ccan't quite get it.

Thanks

Each of the spiders (the two smaller gears in the diff, one on each side of the axle(s) shaft spacer) has the above photo'd washer behind it. So, yes, they are required in a diff, but you only need them if your replacement diff is incomplete. And yes, they ride on the axle, behind the spider gears...You need to determine if your replacement diff has them in place...

Sorry for that reply and congrats on getting it..

I appreciate all the help. I knocked the spider gears and washers out trying to reinstall the axle shaft. Is there a method to putting them back in place?

The method I had to use was clocking the the carrier back with a spider in the upper part of the carrier, then rotating the bottom of the carrier towards you while placing the last spider in the lower part of the carrier. Think you should be able to slide the thrust washers in after or while slowly rotating the carrier. Kinda hard to explain.
It was a little bit of a PITA, but think after you’ve done it a couple times, then it just is what it is.

Did a better job explaining then I could.. agreed it's a pain... if you play with it long enough you'll figure out the correct 'clocking' or positioning of the top then the bottom spider given that youre going to rotate the carrier.. I think it takes most folks more than a couple of attempts to get it... at least 5-6 for me...grins... then once you get the spiders, washers, and axles in, and get your C washers on, pull the axles 'out' as far as the play allows, seems I remember the shaft spacer has to be inserted, and for me that meant it gets inserted at about a 30 degree angle from the bottom, being cognizant of where the 10mm bolt goes in to secure it in place..
Am I correct Rush55?

Once you get either of the lateral spiders in, the works wants to spin all together. At that point it’s a matter of outsmarting the design, which took me a few minutes the first time.
