Hello everyone,

I have just purchased a 1978 FJ40. It was imported from Columbia. Part of the Texas title registration / transfer process is to decide how to classify it. Does anyone have an opinion on registering as a "Classic" vs an "Antique" vehicle?

Regards,
Eric

Eric, your going to have to post some pics before you get an answer.

For antique plates: "Motor vehicle that are at least 25 years old AND a collector's item. The motor vehicle must be used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades or other functions of public interest. Motor vehicles displaying Antique plates may not be used for regular transportation or advertising. The motor vehicle may be driven to and from a location for routine maintenance."

For classic plates: "Motor vehicle at least 25 years old."

So, if you ever plan on driving it, classic is probably the way to go...

Yes, it is nice...

Yea, that's a beauty!!! If it is a classic, does that mean it has to pass inspection too?

Since I want to drive it regularly I am going to register it as classic. I won't be using it as my daily driver. But I want the flexibility to drive it around when I choose to.

I found this short explanation: "If you register it as a classic you have to get it inspected and you are allowed to drive it anywhere anytime.
If you register it as an Antique no inspection is required and by law you are only allowed to drive it in parades, to and from special events, to and from a garage for service or repair etc....."

I registered my '77 as an Antique. I registered it with YOM plates. It costs $50/ 5 years, no inspection required.

I only drive it about 2000 miles per year. I have it insured with Hagertys so they will not cover it if it is a DD. Since I tinker with it all the time, every drive I go on is for "routine maintenance".

LEO around here has never even given me a second look as far as registration. I have had a few follow me and tell me how cool the truck is though .
