After several months of headaches, sweat, tears (over money spent!), and even some blood, the time has finally come to send the old girl for a nice and well deserved make over. I bought my rig this past April from a gentleman in the SGV. Story is that the guy a purchased it from (a landscaper) worked for an old man in the Altadena, California area for several years. For years, he saw the 40 dumped in the old man's yard. One day, the old man asked him if he knew anything about the truck. He told the old man that he did and would like to purchase one for his son. The old man gave him the rig since he was too old work on it. He towed it home and had it for a few months. After realizing how much money he would need to get it on the road again, he decided he would list it for sale instead. Here's where I come in (Sucker). My dad was a fleet mechanic in his younger days and has always been a Toyota lover. Having riden in a Toyota for most of my life, I became a Toyota lover as well (Hondas too!... I hope I dont get kicked out of the forum now). I drove out and checked out the 40 one day and immediately fell in love with it. I also learned that it had been abandoned since 1997. The I was excited about the test drive and disappointed since I never drove her past 20 mph. I left, telling the seller I'd think about it and I'd call him back once I made a decision. I drove back home and continued my drooling over some of the amazing things you guys have done with some of your rigs (this forum creates an interesting form of peer pressure! lol. ADDICTION...) I did some research on parts and gave myself an idea of how much I could possibly be spending to get her mechanically sound (boy was I wrong!) after about two weeks of seeing her for the first time, I made the drive out to where she was, and after some negotiation, I brought her home.

I sped home at a whooping 15-20 miles an hour, like my hair was on fire (because of the gas fumes). The rear axle shook so bad above 20 mph that I swear some of my teeth almost came loose, but we made it, fumigated, but we made it! Since then, My dad and I have rebuilt the rear third member, replaced all the fluids and made some adjustments to the carburetor because it was spewing out raw fuel. I drove it around for a couple weeks slowly increasing speed and finally driving at 55 - 60 mph consistently. And then... the head gasket blew... she couldn't handle it... So we took her apart, sent the head to the shop and put her back together. Ive been driving her around to put some miles on her. I have to say, I'm getting mixed messages! The olfer crowds look at me and give me the fist pump. the younger crowds look at me and wonder... "what is up with this guy's ride!" lol.

So after 8 months of tinkering around on the old girl with the old man, The time came to freshen her up. I'm far from done, but its been a fun learning experience. My uncle works at a body shop and offered to slap some paint on her once I was ready. I jumped on the offer and dropped her off last weekend. I have to admit, leaving her behind felt a bit wrong... like I was forgeting my kid at the supermarket or something. (Kidding) I'll post up pictures of the progress and the final build.

According to the guy I bought it from, the PO and his buddy decided to have a smoke one day while riding around in it. Well, the "lit up" and nearly killed themselves. As a result of that, the passenger side is primered and the interior has some charring. Sucks, but luckily it survived.

The interior isn't in terrible, but at some point they decided to paint the dash black. It was a pretty crappy job, since they didn't bother to remove the lower dash pads. I'll be repainting everything the original mustard color.

There isn't much rust on her over all. There is the typical surface rust on the floors, but all that will be getting sand blasted and sprayed with a liner before being painted mustard again.

The hatch and barn doors will be gone and replaced with ambulance doors. Waiting for some parts to arrive before I can mock them up and drill the holes for the upper amby door hinges.

The front seats look like they were updated from a toyota mini trucks at some point. Theres a crazy seat mounting bracket under there that looks nuts! pretty creative though. I'll be going back to the stock buckets. I purchased a pair a while back. I'm anxious to slap those on.

The rear driver side fender was doinked some time ago. It looks like they never knocked it back out and they simply applied about a pound of bondo to it.

The engine compartment was in really really rough shape. It still doesn't look like I've done much, but I have... doesn't look it! But I have. I have new hoses on the way, A brand spanking new champion radiator, radiator bracket and shroud in the garage waiting for installation. I dont know where this current radiator came from, but that thing is ugly!

Oh, BTW, if you guys look at the first picture in post No. 3, there's a knob on the left side of the light switch. I can't figure out what it's for. Does anyone have any idea of what it's function is? It pulls out like a choke, but there's no change.
 
Progress

The front fenders came off and have been stripped of paint. There were a few different shades of yellow. Bondo was removed from the rear fender and is getting beat back to shape. We'll be cutting off a portion and welding in some new metal. I'm installing the stock tire carrier so I want it to have a good base.

Update

Overall, the body apears to be in great shape, with very little rust. We'll be removing the top today since I was able to get some time off work.

Paint code question

I've been looking through paint codes I've found on the forum and comparing them to some of the build threads. I'm a bit confused. In the color code chart, It looks like the proper paint code for the 76 model year is "Yellow 532". However, the color looks pretty light, almost citrus. When I was removing all the parts from the rig, I noticed the original paint color looks more like a burnt mustard. I looked for different paint charts and found "Yellow 531". I want the darker mustard color. Have any of you guys come accross this? What paint code did you guys go with? Let me know.
 
Whats the paint code on the data plate? Inside [STRIKE]left [/STRIKE] right front fender, if I recall correctly.

I'm currently doing an 'everything apart' repaint of my -76. The fiberglass roof cap is getting a coat of t-12 Cygnus white today (purists disclaimer: yeah I know that's not exactly correct but I highly doubt anyone calls me on it). The body will be going back to its original 854 smurf blue.

Ha. I was actually thinking the same on the top and bezel. The code on the data plate says 532. Which is the lighter yellow color. Since I've been taking it apart, the interior has the darker mustard color.
 
I looked and looked for a PPG code for gray wheels, top and bezel and the silver pewter for interior parts. Never did find much for definitive codes and I decided I was spending wayyyy too much time nit picking.

So, Cygnus white for top and bezel, I had a color match done for the pewter (used the inner part of the ash tray cover), a gray I just thought looked good for the wheels and an off the shelf black.

Some day, its going to look awesome. I've been getting some work done lately but overall, my progress tends to be glacial.

ETA: I wouldn't worry too much about what you see online vs what you see on your cruiser. Find a hidden place on the cruiser that hasn't been exposed to the elements and compare that too an actual chip sheet, or, better still, have a sample made.

Like I said though, I was worrying too much about it and since I am repainting everything, it doesnt matter much, nor do I expect another cruiser to roll up next to me and start snickering about how I am a shade off. I might be a bubble or 2 off but shades don't concern me ;)

I believe C.C.O.T. Has the grey paint three part kit for the rims for like 60.00 bucks
 
Great stories behind this rig!

532 should be Mustard. I strongly recommend you paint it the OEM color (I'm a mustard fan). Also, OEM colors are better at resale time.

Your particular paint seems light for 532, but if that's what the data plate says, then go with it. I am not aware of a '531' paint color, but be aware that many paint books are wrong or show odd codes.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm definitely going to pick up a color sheet and do a comparison. I actually checked the data plate and the color is 532 and LE11 for the trim. Not sure what the LE11 means, but I'm sure I'll find it somewhere on this form.

I currently have some Aluminum American racing wheels on her. I have to be honest though, those steelies are really tempting McGrath. I think in a few months here, I might be in the market for some.

Thanks for your response Steve. I keep hoping someone on the forum might recognize my rig from years past. I was initially leaning toward the greenish gray color of a 40 I found on google. Some fully restored beauty out of Texas. But the more I read on the form, the more I realized the importance of keeping it original. It's the right thing to do.
