Recovery point from 4 holes in rear bumper

The welded in receiver looks like a good idea. I'd add some beef behind it too.

The factory loops have failed on vehicles in Australia too. There's been pics and discussions on LCOOL forums about them over the years.
I would avoid using them for snatched recoveries where there's high dynamic loads. For winching, or towing they should be fine.
If in doubt, use a bridle strap so you're pulling from both loops, not just one.

I recently skull dragged an illegally parked pickup a couple of hundred yards to get it off my construction site using a single tow loop on my 80 and a load chain (tried unsuccessfully to locate the owner). The pickup I shifted had similar tow points, and interestingly, it twisted the pickup's frame a little, but the loop was good.

Yes, I've read that thread several times. I didn't say they weren't strong enough, just that they weren't intended as recovery points. The fact that people successfully use them for recovery does not change the fact that they are shipping tie-downs.

If you regularly use them for recovery, I would change them out for something like this:

You could also get the late model tundra tie-downs as they look pretty beefy.

I've also read all the threads on the pintle mount & would consider it strong enough for light duty towing & light recovery use.
I used my front ones one time to pull a stuck vehicle out of the snow and one of the "recovery" points completely folded. I wouldn't suggest using these myself

Put a pintle hook back there, then rip it, roll it, and punch it dude!

I believe the front loops are actually for securing the vehicle during transportation or for towing. They are definitely not designed for recovery. Also it very bad practice to try and recover anything which requires you to drive the cruiser in reverse. You might end up with a front diff that has lost a couple of teeth...

I started this thread almost 8 years ago. Now I have a Labs rear so I never had to use the rear frame points for recovery. Come to think of I have never had to have my cruiser "recovered" by another truck. I have pulled a bunch of other people out but never had anyone to help me get unstuck. Always a lot of winch or digging. Maybe I need to stop traveling solo.

I’m sure the OEM are typically just tie down points. Lots of members probably regularly use them for recovery but it’s everyone’s prerogative. I personally do not use them and would rather tie into the originally 4 holes that commonly mount a tow pintle with some grade 8 hardware.
