Hello!
I’m probably not the first to share something like this, but I picked up a cheap receiver from Amazon that fits the pattern below the rear doors. I’m not looking to tow anything, just a way of getting all of our skis up the mountain, so 100lbs worth of stuff at most. Out of curiosity, is that particular spot rated?

Jut subscribed to this thread. I'm curious about the same thing, and what others have been able to pull/hold with this type. Do you still have a part number for the Amazon Receiver?

I would be very careful using one of those to tow. If you look inside that crossmember you will see that there is no strength there. It’s just one thin piece of metal. I would recommend adding some thicker sheet metal plate inside the crossmember with extra bolts.
My FZJ75 came with a pintle hitch and I know that it's OEM - they all have them in Saudi and it's on the parts diagram. The rear crossmember is a boxed frame with diagonal supports. Looks and feels pretty sturdy to me but I'm not sure what it's tow rating is. The owner's manual says to ask the Toyota dealer for the rating.

FWIW, the rear crossmember appears very similar to my 80 and I have used it to tow some pretty heavy loads. Having said that, a 70 series, especially a 73, is a much lighter vehicle than an 80.

If you put a bike/ski rack on there, it adds a lever arm and the rear cross member is thin (as @coldtaco has already pointed out) that lever and bouncing along the road, twists the crossmember and can fatigue the metal. The factory pintle has the load vertical and the channel is in shear, with no lever arm, so not as much risk to the channel.

I modified an 80 series frame mounted class 3 receiver to mine. It was pretty easy, just had to make it a bit narrower.

just commenting from what I found when I had the bed off of mine. there where cracks in that part of the cross member that I welded up. I never used that part for towing as mine came with a tow hitch from AUS. so don't know what caused the cracks.
