Did a quick search and didn't find anything except squeaks and rattles...

My rear springs make a nice loud "Ba-Doy-ing" noise on a hard bump. As if you were to hit the spring with a big stick... super odd. It's repeatable and consistent, if I back out of my drive way and both wheels drop off the round curb at once, BADOYING... any ideas?

I occasionally have this issue as well mainly over speed bumps in residential areas. Do you have aftermarket rear springs? I have a set of 2” Iron Man springs and they make a district springy sound over bumps and much more while wheeling, especially if I slowly flex the rear out.

Yup, these are OME medium 2.5” springs (i forget the number.. 860’s maybe?)

Have you found a solution or just let them be?
 
I would jack up the rear suspension and look for points of contact... friction where the paint has worn off. Some possible spots are the inner spring bumps top, the lower perch and even the rear sway bar. The new springs are thicker and so clearance in areas are tighter.

Done that, twice actually. I’ve also ridden in the back and without a doubt know it’s the springs making that distinct “Ba-Doy-ing” noise. I do have a theory though: Besides my springs everything else in the rear is stock w/original bushings. I’m thinking my rear axle is not where it should be and it’s not compressing directly centered under the truck. Think of it like trying to pinch the opposite ends of a spring together but slightly offset. It binds and bends and when you release it (the suspension decompresses) it makes that spring sound which resonates through the body metal body and axle. Possible solution: get adj. upper & lower control arms. Just a thought.

hmm, I will look into that more... I do have adjustable uppers... maybe some tweeking is in order
 
Somebodyelse5, this has been going on in my 98 LX470 for a long time but its not consistent. I have even described the noise like you without ever having seen this.
Almost always over a bump (our driveway in CO is called 'mountable curb' by the city which is exactly that, a curb with an angle you drive over) or similar. I've tried driving over my phone in video mode to see what is making the noise but could never quite tell. Recently I was jacking entire rear end to work on brakes and it happened and I think its the PS rear axel spring. What have you concluded since your post in Feb? Would love to get rid of this in an otherwise fantastic rig.
BTW, I (Slee actually) have removed the AHC and replaced with OME 1-1/2" lift so springs and shocks are not OEM. Very similar in this regard too.
 
Subscribed, I have the same issue. I had it when I was running king springs with my ahc system, and I still have it now with the tough dog suspension system and new upper and lower control arms.

Some triflow sprayed into the spring perches seemed to do the trick. I’m since moved up to heavy rate spring and have not had any issues.
 
I have this happening on heavy OME 2.5'' springs. Pretty annoying when going over whoopdy whoops hearing the struck sound like a slinky. What's bizarre is I can climb under the truck and squeeze two of the spring rings together and it makes the noise... I thought all of the weight of the truck was on the springs?

yup, all the weight is on the springs... but locally you can still make them move, it's why those springs are so tall

Give the perches a good lubing with tri flo or something like that, should help.
 
I found more than once, the upper shock securing nut loose. It almost always after a shock has been changed. Sometime, it's upper bushing assembly, is not properly installed.

Inspect:
While under the rear of vehicle on your back. Grab upper portion of shock. See if it moves around at all, it should not. Have someone bounce the rear of vehicle up and down while under there.. Look, listen and feel not only at shocks but all points that move like control arm bushings etc..

If shock is loose at top (in it's upper perch), it will clank.

If rig lifted, I suppose you could have a issue where the spring is not always compressed. For those I'd try a 30mm poly or rubber coil spacer.

Again, best way to find is crawl under while someone bounces the rig up and down to simulate road bumps and dips.
 
I feel like I have just reunited with my long lost family reading this post. I have been living with this Ba-Doy-ing sound for over a year since having a shop install the 2” Tough Dog (yellow coils) lift package on my 2001 LC, and it is driving me up the wall. Ba-Doy-ing sound happens over speed bumps, curbs, any sort of articulation, and I feel certain the sound generates from one of the rear coils.

Like you said, @TheForger, I thought similar and inspected real axle to find mine is dead center. My control arms are stock.

Took it back to installer a year ago and they couldn’t reproduce. Took it to a Toyota dealer last week actually and the tech simply said it was the lift coils and offered no solution other than going back to stock.

@Somebodyelse5 do you have a photo of the “perches“ that point out the problem zone? I am ready to try the Triflow thing.

I can get one later, but really all I did was spray a mess of try flow (a dry lube would work better if you've got it) all around where the springs themselves hit the perch. I was real frustrated so I took no prisoners and just hit the whole area. I also hit the area where the springs land on the axle. Something to note, there are little rubber "seats" that sit between the top of the spring and the perch, that should mitigate the noise. May be worth checked that bad boy too.

I would also check what @2001LC suggested. My method of throwing lube at every problem isn't always the bast way forward :hmm:

3 sets of different springs 1 made the same noise.
1- King Spring Kt79..whatever, no noise
2- Icon 80 series progressive, the noise started
3- OME heavy, noise went away.

I took the spring out and everything was in place, rubber isolator was good, everything was in place, also have been using the same rubber isolators for all the springs.
I blame the springs but cant point out why. My friend with a 4th gen 4Runner also with progressive springs has the same noise.
I suspect the part of the spring that is closer together than the rest.

Hi, do you mean that after putting the rubber isolation problem is solved?
What id do is start by oiling it.. if it doesn't work you can try disassembling it and stuff it with grease. Also it might just be an unscrewed nut or something.. just make sure to check everything
