Looking for the fold down leg (x2) on '78 and newer fj40. Can't trust the rubber bumper to hold up the occupant when in use. Ive straightened out the bottom frame one time too many!!! Has anyone fabbed one? Looks simple if a guy has all the tools and machinery... supplies and patience

conduit and some fab work

My 77 FJ40 has those bumpers on the rear seat bottoms. When my father bought this 40 back in the 80's, someone had made some storage boxes to go under the seats when they were down. They gave support for the seats and also somewhere to put stuff. Just another idea for you.

I made some hefty speaker boxes that doubled as supports......but I was a young wipper-snapper back then. Storage boxes sound like a better idea.

Someone used to sell steel boxes that bolted to the rear wheel wells and mimicked their shape with the front rake and all. Haven't seen them for over well over a decade. I kept thinking "Hmm. Tool box/speaker cabinet/seat support all in one." I was thinking of making some or subbing out to a sheet metal shop but I doubt I'll bother. Now days my friends are all too old and fat to wanna ride in the rear for more than a quick trip to the quickie-mart.

I fabbed up seat bottoms this past winter to go with some donor backs. I decided to also fab the legs. I wouldn't call it an "easy" job, but was very satisfying! You would need a grinder, welder, method of bending (i made a wooden form to bend around and filled the tube with sand), files, etc.. I am very happy with the results. Seat covers and holddown straps from Cruisercorp, 2 inch high density foam.
If you want any dimensions, material sizes, etc, let me know and I can send them over.

Those look awesome. I would appreciate anything you can pass on to me as far as parts and dimensions, etc... I’m also big on building my own pieces and parts
I think the thingamajig that locks the legs up and down into position would be the hard part. Springs and some fab work. I’ve done worse.... I like the challenge.
