I've been diving into the details of the rear hatch design on the 1964 Toyota FJ40, and it's surprisingly elusive. Most videos and guides show you the beautiful results of restorations, but skip over one key detail: how does the upper hatch actually operate?

What’s confusing is that most videos don’t actually show this mechanism in motion. It’s such a simple system, yet remains oddly undocumented.

If anyone has footage of a factory-original rear hatch being opened—or details on the original friction stays

Here is my 1 minute explanation I just did for you. I did have to take one side of my outer latches apart as one of mine were stuck and I could not easily open it. Once I did that it was all good.

Let me know if you need any other info or have questions. Mine is a 1964 as well.
