I am in the middle of the GM rear disks brake conversion. I have everything bolted on but for some reason the calipers with the brake pads will not fit over the gm rotors. I think the pads are too thick! It is like 1/8 to narrow to fit on the rotors. These are new pads, anyone else have this problem? Do i need different pads, or did i get the wrong gm rotor?

Confused where to go from here.

You also want to make sure your shims between the bracket and the flange are good. If they are not aligned, you will have trouble getting the pads to fit.

THanks for all the responses, the calipers are brand new and i tried compressing them farther but they will not move even with vice and a snipe.

I have not drilled the holes yet for the calipers so i dont think shims are the problem as i cannot get it over the rotor at all.

what year is the correct year for the gm rotors?

I got 94 gm front disks.

THanks
ROb.

I am using Profitt's brackets, Monte calipers with MT Classic II wheels with 3 5/8" back-spacing with no rubbing whatsoever. I believe these are the same as your rims less the rim lock thingy.

Also I have not heard of the thin vs. thick rotor deal...I used the wejacks link as my guide. For rotors use Bendix 141454, Napa 85977, Raybestos 5977. They all are the same.

If you need a longer studs get those from the rear of an FJ60 Toy #90942-02052. They are like 1.75" long, about 1/2" longer than stock FJ's IIRC.

Some more from the same thread....

Go to my webpage and read up on it. The pattern is there. But I Do NOT SELL the brackets anymore. Get the brackets from JT outfitters.

Hope this helps!

Thanks All,

I figured out what is happening like zook94 said i have the wrong rotors.

FYI for anyone else: In 92 gm stopped offering the 1" rotors and from then on uses the 1.25" rotors (in 91, 90 and earlier the beefer 1.25" were offered if you have the heavy duty chassis so be carful how you handle the parts guys questions).

So i have to go buy the 90 non heavy duty chassis rotors now!

Thanks again!

Rob.

I had the same problem. Since they are for the rear, I sanded them down a little with a belt sander and they work great. There seems to be plenty of meat left on the pads as i only removed about a 1/16" per pad. Good luck.
