That is an idea. I need to find out what the ring gear size is. I heard that it's only still an 8" though. I will search...

Like I say, just an idea. Gotta be bigger than that. If the new V8 engine in the Tundra is good for almost 400HP, then the axle has to be pretty beefy too. Of course, then you're probably gonna have wheel fitment problems, I would bet a 15" wheel won't fit around the discs they put on those axles. And it's gonna be W I D E.

Oh, you are referring to the new 5.7 rear diff?? I don't think that is an option for me.

We did happen to look at one today in a tech training course that I was in today that hadn't been installed in a truck yet. It is huge!

FWIW and probably wrong:

2: probably wrong but........

all this is off the top of my head so I am probobably (very) wrong but I'm trying to stimulate you into thinking of a soulution as well.

What was I thinking

oh yeah, thats what I was thinking and why I said that.............FOUR times!!!

some one mentioned to me that fj60 have a split case rear and for some reason it has stuck with me.............evidently wrong, but it has stuck with me.

Have you thought about retrofitting your 4skinner with an 80 to go around your 80 rear axel? Just trying to think "outside the box". :D

yeah, what he said...

Also, what you have is a fairly saleable item, post it up here, enough rock bangers around here are busting stuff that it should sell quick.

4runner, meh.

It doesn't fit. Nuff said.

I do agree with reconsider rear 80 lockers for hard wheeling. My truck just got the housing cut to torch a twisted spline between the locking collar and the side gear. Not common in normal wheeling, VERY pain in the ass and expensive when it does help.

Aside from fitting an 80 rear to match your diff, I think you might try to move this post over to the hardcore corner to get some inputs on that powerplant and appropriate running gear...

The "old" tundra is an "8.4" diff. This is stronger than a standard 8" due mainly to the fact that there is a girdle that bridges to the two main carrier bearing caps, thereby preventing deflection of the housing itself. It is actually still an 8" ring gear, but is commonly referred to as the 8.4(I have not been able to figure out why). These axles are WIDE for most of us. They are, I believe, 67" wide.

The new Tundra is running a 9.5" ring gear behind the 4.7 and a 10.5" ring gear behind the 5.7. Both are typical Toyota w/ drop out 3rds.
Don't know what the width is on these.

Perhaps you should give us some more general specs on the rig, i.e. motor, tire size, gearing, useage, etc. and we can help recommend a rear axle for you. Better yet, start a new thread in the hardcore or mini-truck section and direct us over there, and we can help you out over there w/o cluttering up the 80 section. :)

Good luck,

Ary

I had my finger on the button but decided not to reply.

I once had a T-100 that blew the rear I once had a V6 4R diff and tried to instal it in the T-100 rear no way, the bolts did not line up and I had no idea fow to make it work..........................

Have you been told as well that all V6 rears are the same?

I do agree with popular opinion but some times you just have to find out for yourself.

I would reserch the rear diff gaskets remember, the "TRD's" do not fit the mini's with out modification. Youre app is not common so mabie it's not reported yet, mabie you will be the first to find it. ;)

Thats not an fj60 rear, thats a mini or runner axle.....either way its not a 60 series. 60 series look almost identical to the 80 series axle with a slight *more off set.

Ill bet ya any money if you could see the t-case and tranny in that picture it would not be toyota....more like a 203/205 or D300 case.....all reasons why you would run a centered rear axle.

there is also the option of the mini/cruiser hybrid rear axle....many people have done it. And if it can stand up in woodys buggy Im sure its plenty strong...

at a closer look thats not even a cruiser......thats a runner.

Tanks different, shock mounts, shock cross member...alll different.

I know all this does not matter if the bolts dont line up but......

thats a fj60 rear...

does NOT look offset to me?

Don't know if that's an FJ60 rear. Looks more like a mini-truck rear. The vent is in the wrong place, the cover is not removable, the e-brake is clocked wrong on the backing plate. The position of the ebrake guide is wrong. If it's centered it's not stock FJ60.

There have been some Cruiser axles that were centered using the outer legs from a mini, and running mini axle shafts, but that's way more work than most would want to do.

Just keep in mind, that very often the cheapest solution seems expensive at first.

I would aim for the BEST solution, and realize it won't be much more than trying to cob together something that will just be redneck fabricated crap. Do things right and do them once. That is far cheaper in the end.

edit-Lowtide beat me to the punch a bit.

MINI/CRUISER HYBRID? Looks like I need to get a hold of woody? Could I just cut the center section of the cruiser out and weld it in place of mine? Is that the thinking?

P.S. Sorry aout putting this in the 80 section. If someone wants to move it thats fine...

Cruiser center section mini outters. Also gets rid of those pesky c-clips...

Sorry I found that in 60's tech under SOA, sorry.

Still trying to search what "SOA" is

BUT

I think based on another thread on this site and on the PBB, the cruiser/mini hybrid is the answer. That would take care of the width and offset issues and also my strength issues!

Thanks everybody! Like I've said before, ih8mud/cruiser guys are awesome!

spring over axle? Reserved for those darn leaf spring people.

Speak to Brian at Diamond Axle. He can make you any housing that you want. Ben (our sales manager) runs a diamond axle that uses the 80 center section with 35 spline axles. You can get a 80 rear ARB locker with 35 spline inner parts (not from ARB) and then have them make the housing any width you want. Run 35 spline axles with 80 series disc brakes. Don't ask for pictures, since we are doing an article for one of the magazines on this.

Custom fabricated housings is the way to go for hardcore. Way stronger, easier to work with and no wasted time cutting off brackets and cleaning up a housing you will eventually bend./

Sounds great. Sounds very expensive.

The original poster said something about a budget.

If he can spend that kind of $$, he should go right to a custom D60.
